I saw this earlier. Hm I wonder if doing this would make my already broken OG Xbox work again? Probably not but that would be pretty cool. Both my 360s are borked and I kind of just want to be able to play Halo again.
God Microsoft why do you have to make such shitty, shitty products? _________________

this kind of leakage is a thing that will happen with time about anything. Microsoft didn't build the Xbox with long term lasting in mind.
I somehow don't have any vinegar in my house to clean the spot. Welp time for a late night grocery run.

that's definitely what leaking caps look like
and yeah, caps will leak in all kinds of hardware. depending on the quality and the type used you'd generally expect to get between 15 - 30 years out of an average set. these seem like they're one or two standard deviations south of the average. |

So I opened up to fix a problem that wasn't a problem yet and found a giant thing that means my xbox is probably going to die soon? ;_;
edit: white stuff is present in every opened xbox video so going to assume it is AOKAY yes.
There is definitely a cap buried that does have leakage I need to clean though don't know what it does and do not have the skills to replace. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

You know the Xbox's MAMEs have supported The Grand Master for like 5 years? |
I don't even know what that means

| So I have a 1.6 box and I guess I'm either good or totally fucked, reports are conflicting. Guess I better just pop it open and see. |

Okay, it seems like they may actually have fixed this issue somewhat with the 1.6 hardware revision. The faulty capacitor has been moved around and now it's a gold one which I guess is always better? Not seeing any damage topside but I guess I better unscrew the entire motherboard to make sure nothing is eating through.
Apparently, in addition to putting in a sturdier capacitor they also made the system completely unable to function without one so in my case, if I do find that one is leaking, I'd need to find a replacement and solder it in which I do not look forward to. So I guess my odds are better but stakes are higher? _________________

| Both my Xboxes are from 2004 so I think they're 1.6? I will check it out. |

hearing the stuff about how 1.6's are fixed is good, seeing as my original died and MS gave me a new one
which counters them not giving a shit about my saves _________________

Damn, thanks for the info Rude. Turns out mine is a 1.0 board. Luckily it looks like it had only just begun to leak, so that's good.
Pictures!
The cap in question sits right where that empty circle is now, to the lower right of those big three caps in a row. It's right behind controller port 1!
