So my parents are willing to get me a computer for my birthday (because I've been oh so good this year and partially because they forgot I was born for the last two years), and so I decided on getting a Macbook of some sort. Now I know there are some resident Macheads here and I was wondering whether now is the time to get one or if there's some impending new Macbook HD Ultra version coming out soon that I should diligently wait for.

Also, I'm looking into advice for which kinds or where there's good deals on getting Macs of these sorts. I was planning on just ordering one from the website, probably a Macbook Pro. Anyone have any good knowledge on these sort of things?

Thread relevant to Thatbox.

Make sure you get an education discount, I guess?

I know this is probably what my money is going towards this summer :(

Yeah, 200 bucks off just for going to the student store. People are expecting updates in a month or so, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as big as CD>C2D, and you could wait until the end of the year for Leopard if you wanted to wait. Either wait for Leopard or buy now, I say! (If you feel like waiting but not quite so long, give them until after WWDC in June!)

PS, I fell in love with Mariel's 17-inch PB, but only got a 15" MBP for myself and I'm beginning to have adulterous thoughts. Make your choice wisely!

That 17 inch is another $800 though.
I could eat for a few months with that kind of money...

So I'm thinking about settling on the 15 inch 2.33 GHZ model. Is this a good idea? Will this be GOOOOOOOOOOD??

Oh wait, with the student discount, the 17 inch version becomes $2600. That's not as bad as $2800 but still...

All I'm saying is just think about it real good. If you want a 17-inch you want a 17-inch. If you don't, cool!

I don't have a macbook (but people think I have a mac just because the thing is fucking white gragh), but I find that 15" is basically the most perfect size ever for a notebook. Big enough to give you a bit of real estate, but small enough to remain quite portable.

This is just my opinion of course, but I think 17" really kills portability...

Use this: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

And the answer is no, wait a couple months.

Also 17" is retardly too big if you plan on carrying it around everywhere.

There will be Santa Rosa equipped ones out soon!

I wouldn't wait till October for leopard, it'll be dirt cheap and painless to upgrade anyway.

Does anyone know where I can buy OSX?

And, like, how to install it on a pretty Fujitsu?

Yeah.

And no!

I like the size of my 17-incher. It never feels like a burden to carry around.

OH WE WERE TALKING ABOUT COMPUTERS lol.

No, yeah, my 17" MBP is a pretty reasonable size. I can pick it up and carry it all the way across the room with ease.

Just do searches on your warez sources for OSx86. Buying it does you no good unless you just want to own a license (since you can't use the official install discs on non-Macs), but you're breaking the EULA when you put it on other stuff anyway so I don't see the point.

17 inch is a bit big for a laptop unless your the backpack sort.
I have a 15 inch Titanium Powerbook (Its about 5 years old now even has Apple Garamond on it instead of Apple Myriad for the "Powerbook" text) Still running great (dragging windows and Exposé is like butter) and has never had to be reformatted and I had one kernel panic in 5 years and I blame that on Maya.

WWDC is on June 11, if anything big is gonna happen then it will be then, I doubt Macbooks will get an overhaul seen as everyones bets are on the iMacs.

No point waiting till Leopard comes out because thats ages away yet and its only cheap to but it especially the student licence.

Make a new post when you get it so we can suggest the awesome applications!

Wtf. Since when can't you install your own software on whatever you want?

I can't tell whether you're just trolling or what? OS X as it exists on its install discs cannot be installed on non-Mac computers. You need a hacked version from the OSx86 project to install OS X on a non-Mac computer. This is why I was confused at your desire to buy the operating system; the commercial version is useless to you without a Mac, and, in addition, the EULA that comes with OS X expressly forbids installation on non-Macs anyway.

another god, since Mac OS X will run like crap or not at all on many/most PCs because of bad drivers, allowing it would hurt their easy-to-use brand (as well as their hardware sales).

Installing it on generic hardware is missing a good half of the point.

I like my computers to come with plain cases not covered in "powered by" and "designed for" stickers and with a well designed power supply not a chunky multi-cabled pile of shit.

Come on, they're actually cheaper than the well designed regular PCs (e.g the Thinkpad)

Product MacBook Pro
Recommendation: Don't Buy - Updates soon
Last Release October 24, 2006
Days Since Update 189 (Avg = 182)

Product MacBook
Recommendation: Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle
Last Release November 08, 2006
Days Since Update 174 (Avg = 204)

I owuld defintly give it to the end of summer before buying a macbook or macbook pro. Event if nothing is announced at WWDC they still could do an update at a non-event.

Hmm, since I'm not really dying to get one I suppose I could wait a few months. June, you say? That's quite a while though.

Let's use this thread to talk about Macs and your favorite applications then, I suppose. (Even though this has been done at least three times before, as I recall.)

I can't stand laptops personally. Uncomfortable, fragile, theft-prone, less bang for buck. I'd only buy one if my situation required me to have one.

After realizing I don't spend any time at all in my room except to sleep, it's much more useful to have a computer I can carry around and do things with anywhere than to have a clunky desktop on my desk. Also, I'm really paranoid about my belongings so I'm not too concerned about having it stolen.

It also helps that I don't play computer games at all - the last one I played was PSO Blue Burst a few months ago and that was only one or two times. I usually end up just reading manga, using Photoshop/After Effects, and Maya. Still, I'm aiming towards the Pro model because I'd like to play the new PSU expansion and could use that extra processing power when compiling animation together.

Yeah - frankly, I was mostly being a jerk. If you don't play games, there's not much reason not to get a laptop.

If you DO play games, though - different story.

I don't know. Once I dropped juice into my keyboard, killing it. Then I had to pay an exorbitant fee to get it repaired because the parts are not commodities.

Sure, it's got its disadvantages - everything does - but I think for the non-gamer, laptops are pretty much the way to go. The convenience of the portability is pretty nice, especially with wifi all over the place now. (Before wifi, I couldn't understand why anyone except a businessman would EVER get a laptop.)

But games - you need a desktop.

The MBP with 1920x1200 is not LED backlit, only the 15.4" MBP has that.

http://www.engadget.com/gallery/macbook-pro-backlight-comparison-led-vs-ccfl-1/266111/

Not bad, not bad.

Edit: Interestingly, when the light is set down to 50%, the LED suddenly looks dimmer: http://www.engadget.com/gallery/macbook-pro-backlight-comparison-led-vs-ccfl-1/266121/

I wonder if they just put in more 'steps' of brightness or something.

Those new macbook pros do look kinda tempting, what with their new shiny Geforce cards.. maybe i could get some three-dee work done on em now!

Although its been stated that laptops aren't for gamers, does anyone have good gaming experience with one of the higher-end macbook pros? (be it on OSX or bootcamp Windows)

I've played HL2 (Win) and Defcon and WoW (OS X) on my C2D/ATI MBP and been extremely satisfied with performance, even though people were complaining about the graphics card being "old" when I got it in November.

So someone tell me the difference between a matte screen and a glossy one.

I recall Tim saying that the glossy one was really nice and shiny or something to that point. Is this true? Is there a major difference? Which should I go for if I'll primarily use the computer for art and design type things where color accuracy is really important?

I was doing some research on the screens earlier today.. Apparently the glossy one has more vibrant colours, but when outdoors, it can blind you (when viewed from the correct angles ¬_¬ ;). Some folk also complain about the glare you get with the glossy.

Im tempted to wait a bit longer for the new OS to come out.. Panther? I think its that big cat. Hopefully the boot camp is completely poi-fected by then.
