i was playing Phantasy Star III over the last week and i realized there arent really enough games that let you embrace lineage of your characters: dont get me wrong theres certainly a ton (if i recall one of the suikoden games lets you do this) but i kind of think its a more interesting take on the standard roleplaying game story evolution
specifically, i don't just mean games where you can play a characters son or daughter: what are games where the type of character you play later in lineage is directly affected by the actions you took as the descendants parent? _________________

Cubivore, though that's probably not exactly what you have in mind.

infinity blade
edit: yeah i guess it would be helpful to post a description.
In infinity blade (as i understand it), each time you die and continue, you continue as the descendant of the guy you died as, while still keeping your progress through the dungeon. _________________ @FinalArremer

In the Oreshika series you play as a clan where each member of it is cursed to a total lifetime of 2 years but are at the same time blessed with their children maturing in only 6 months. You battle with these tiny generations to find a way to break your curse.
This is only from what I've read of the games though so I have no idea how involved the whole generational system is. _________________

Record of Agarest War and its prequel come to mind. While attempting to Google that game's name up I inadvertently discovered this:

Yes, this is a wonderful thing in the first game, where each playthrough begins with "Father, I will avenge you". Note this is only true of the first game. In the sequels they give in to the need to have a single identifiable hero and change this to the protagonist being basically resurrected every 20 years. |

Apparently this is going to be one of the core features of Massive Chalice. Maybe skelethulu can weigh in? _________________

Rogue Legacy. I haven't played it yet but it's basically an action platformer thing with rogue-like elements in that each time you die your next character is a descendent of your previous one. Each new character also has their own genetic traits that affect the game in various ways, like if you roll one that's colorblind then you'll play the whole game in black and white until you die and roll another one.
Seemed like a pretty neat game. _________________

Crusader Kings I and II, the traits of your offspring are not only derived partially from those of the parents; children are also molded by their primary caregiver, to the point of gaining that caregiver's culture -- if you choose to raise your children yourself, there's also a series of events where you have some control over how your children might turn out.
More broadly, the game really is about constant maneuvering in order to best position your dynasty for the future. |

And then in the third one they suddenly decide their story is super urgent now so you resurrect after just a few hours. _________________

Tokyo Jungle. Someone posted a wonderful comic strip here where doggy starts in year 1 and ends up after some generations. Might be a bit like Cubivore, never got that in yurop though … but I got me Doshin the Giant, the tradeoff game we got … _________________

90% of my time on select button is spent trying to come up with interesting thread titles:
also, I name all of my jrpg characters Hrothgar if space is available.
I like how Infinity Blade does things, though I've never played it (I don't think I'd ever be able too, either.)
I wonder, how do they make keeping the same progress through the dungeon make sense? _________________

I guess over a generation if I was a really evil overlord I would probably hire some more help. _________________

You don't keep the dungeon progress. Enemies, dead or alive, are replaced by more powerful ones as generations pass, apart from the boss, who only comes back stronger if you defeat him. Instead you keep your equipment and stats. |

One of the more recent Fire Emblem (Awakening) games had you pairing off your troops and then having their children fight with you.

if you want to go full Public Enemy, Elvis has to be a red mage
and I think Ford is more of a Fighter
shame Agnew couldn't have become a Ninja in real life |

This MAY not matter, but -
according to both (yes, I own two) my copies of Beowulf,
the sons (and/or daughters??) of Hrothgar are (were) -
Hrethric, Hrothmund, and Freawaru; not another Hrothgar... _________________

I don't really like this when it's just "Choose your wife among your potential wives"
Anyway Romancing SaGa 2 goes pretty in depth with it as I've heard, with three generations of characters.
Fire Emblem 4 (the first one on Snes, with HUGE maps) had the child system as a much major focus of the game than Awakening.
The game is divided between two parts; in the first part you control the parents, then THEY ALL DIE and in the second part (20ish years later) you control their children. (Plus various other crappy characters)
You can have characters marrying each other in the first part, in order to have super-children for the second part with the same skills as their parents and 1,5x their average stats or something? You can get insanely powered characters, like even better than T.G. Cid in Final Fantasy Tactics.
The children will always have the same face no matter the parent, but you get entirely different (and way weaker, with hair that's probably less long and less blue/green) people if you don't have the parents marry. |

In the roleplay group I belong to we have an extended and contrived joke where all of the norse people are named after their fathers and mothers. Not in a logical sort of way, just the son of Fafnir is expected to be Fafnir, and the son of Hrothgar is expected to be named Hrothgar. _________________
