I think Pac-Man CE is a little bit overrated. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it, so the universal praise is deserved in that sense, but there's also no depth or variety there to hold my interest for more than an hour. DX wasn't really a breakthrough on that front either. When it comes to abstract minimalist games, about half the titles in the Bit Generations series are better than Pac-Man CE, for instance.
