Didn't know where else to put this, and I didn't want it to get buried in other threads, as its too cool.
A stunning new on-going documentary series from Red Bull Music Academy about the dawn of video game music and the revolutionary composers of their time (Hip Tanaka, Yuzo Koshiro, Nobuo Uematsu)
Freaking amazing.

| It's so embarrassing that I love RedBull so much because of all this junk the sponsor. |

Not really embarrassing. They manage to do some cool things, in the end. Yknow? Dollar power. _________________

Lots of companies do jerk-wad squat cool with their cash though, this seems to a cooler than usual exception.
Although Red Bull does use a lot of its cash/power to keep their family members out of jail. _________________

I think their research and how in-depth they are going with this, just from the first episode alone, is well done. I mean, its not your generic "Oh listen to some NES music! Wasn't that neat?!" No, they got some great composers and games referenced in there. Gimmick?! And The Hip Tanaka interview was superb. And seeing the breakdowns on sketchpads of compositions is great.
Love the way its shot and can't wait to see the other episodes and interview. Especially Yuzo Koshiro.
Unrelated, they did an amazing interview with MF DOOM. As any fan of his knows, he's a Sasquatch of hip hop and recluse, and there is a good hour of great digging and questions with him. _________________ http://www.iamthefourth.com/ |

Yeah, this was great, thank you RadRad. I'm really looking forward to the interview with Shinji Hosoe. I saw a Dragon Spirit cabinet, got my fingers crossed they'll talk about that... I think it was his first game. Yuzo Koshiro should also be good.

I didn't like this. I guess the weird flashiness and hyperactivity and superficiality is well explained by it being sponsored by an energy drink company? Not really sure what anyone (who is familiar with videogames) got out of watching that? I would rather they just focus on one person (Junko Ozawa, maybe) per episode and skip all the 'posing' scenes and non-comments by other, unrelated musicians. Actually, that guy with the little keyboard seemed interesting; just talk to him for two hours.
Sometimes I hate documentary film makers as much as real estate agents and landlords. |

I'd rather that happen too, but I think the documentary's intent is to chart development across a range of people in a somewhat chronological way, and not to be hyperfocused portraits. The non-comments (which, yes, I agree, are dull and don't contribute much, although I do understand the desire to show some sort of "ripple effect") by unrelated musicians will only begin to annoy me if they become prominent. But they make up a very small part of the current video, and I can't be bothered to get worked up over them.
I'm glad this is a thing that is happening less for myself and more for the composers. |

Episode 2 is up!
Focused on Konami and Sunsoft, with its cult hit Gimmick and featuring a great interview with its composer!
And damn, I want a Blade Runner-like movie using the OST of Lagrange Point! Such freaking good music! _________________ http://www.iamthefourth.com/ |

They got Junko Ozawa and Hip Tanaka to do sit-down interviews. They found the dude from Rebecca that Konami brought in to help compose Lagrange Point. They found the guy who composed Gimmick! talk about the effect his music had on people 20 years later. They have Hally doing fill-in commentary for everything. These are all names basically nobody in the English-speaking world knows, deep cuts, whatever you want to call it.
You can tell just by watching the first episode that a person with a lot of knowledge and deep interest in video game music and music in general made the decisions on who to talk to. And you're complaining this thing is superficial?
The fuck?

Those are the most incredible album covers. They just get better and better.
I do wonder why Warnaar (from Anamanaguchi) is present since he hasn't said anything. It's a little awkward. |

Yeah. I think they waste all that, though.

I think that's a fair enough approach, and agree with Deets that whomever they've got doing research on this is doing a great job. I guess my main problem comes from the episodes only running 15 minutes, I guess. If each was a half or full hour I'm sure all those little extra things would stay little, and we'd get more of the interesting stuff. |

Episode 3 could've stood to have lost all the footage with Mr. I Won't Take My Glasses Off Indoors Or Emote Too Strongly Because That's NOT COOL. And also mentioned how exceptional Sakimoto was in the usage of FM synthesis with his Terpsichorean driver. Otherwise, a good episode. I wonder if anyone knows what the tune at the 7:35 mark is. Seems like something Tamayo Kawamoto could've written.
Btw, since it's not labeled and people might be curious, the chipper tune that plays during the bit with Sakimoto in the sushi restaurant is from the obscure Hourai High School SuFami soundtrack. |

Oh man, that interview with the composer of Street Fighter II was great, and funny insight on the making of the Blanka theme.
Episode 4 is up and its ALL ABOUT THAT SEGA!

Unlike some of the dissenters in this thread, I have been thoroughly enjoying this series so far, but Episode 5 was a pretty big letdown. It promises to be about "RPG music" but is 100% about Uematsu and Final Fantasy and the annoying nerds (sorry it's true) who think it's awesomely legitimate to play Final Fantasy music with real orchestras. They literally didn't even mention another game (/series) or composer. You can't have an 8/16-bit JRPG music discussion without at least mentioning Yasunori Mitsuda.
Til now the series has been getting into some relatively deep cuts (ignoring Koji Kondo in preference to Hip Tanaka, that's bold) but this episode was as lame as its detractors make out the whole series to be. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Or Motoi Sakuraba, Or Noriyuki Iwadare, Or Hirokazu Tanaka, Or Michiru Yamane, or or or... if we're getting more modern, Shoji Meguro. _________________

That's prob why they didn't interview him.
It's hard to know what interviews have or haven't happened because of availability or willingness.
I do agree that this last episode was stupidly limited in its representation, though.
Also Masashi Hamauzu was not credited for the piano piece played during the Final Symphony bit. NOT BY UEMATSU

Yamane hasn't composed for any 16-bit JRPGs. She's getting interviewed anyway. Must be the next/last episode. |

ah, now that these eps are on ytube, i can watch them without the hassle of having to figure out the cascade of unblocking websites necessary that allows a normal human careful web-user to watch stuff. Looking forward to Yuzo's input! _________________

Too bad that Nintendo apparently wanted nothing to do with this (so no Kondo whatsoever and you get scrambled notes in the Tanaka BGMs, although it would still be pretty cool if he or his YMCK pals remade them for the occasion). _________________

There are a lot of Final Fantasy fans, dude. They probably enjoyed it. They already had Shimomura in the context of SF2 who has become a JRPG staple as well.
this series was really cool I don't need 2 hour interviews with one person, i enjoyed the bite size interviews especially when you got a glimpse at the occasional emotion like wistfully recalling being young adults at the start of a career or mixed feelings about moving on from the industry |
