I loved to see a movie by Sam Raimi, who hates Venom, that feels like a movie by a guy who hates Venom. Because, well, Venom is a really, really stupid character. As are most comic book characters. He's not as stupid as Mysterio, I guess. What's sad is up to this point, they managed to keep the influence of very poorly created comic book characters to a minimum; the Green Goblin was actually kind of OK, and Doc Ock made sense. The whole Black Suit Spider-man from Secret Wars II and Venom origin is laughably bad, and it was great to see them try and fit it into a movie that was ultimately about jazz music.

The movie needed Mysterio instead of Venom.
