I have no idea what determines whether or not you will do Y+B finishing moves*, but I've found that it's impossible to not-win large group engagements while mashing those two buttons. Y parries any attack coming your way and then, when the game decides it's time, Y+B will kill an enemy and make you invincible while doing so. I spent a considerable amount of time earlier mashing Y+B with my eyes closed in an area where enemies seemed to rush in indefinitely.
The stealth mechanics in this are pretty ridiculous. You can just run up to an orc's face and press RT+X to kill him. Orcs are still vulnerable to stealth kills while doing their little battle cry after seeing you. At one point I flipped over an orc's shoulders (as in putting my hands on his shoulders and using his body to lift myself up), he said "what was that noise?", and I stealth killed him.
I like this more than Assassin's Creed because LotR stuff looks cool and it gives me a lot more freedom to wander around doing shit.
The premise is also pretty cool, I suppose.
Anyone else playing this?
I was going to call this thread Shadow of Arkham, but then I thought that might be stupid.
-Edit-
*Oh, I misread something in the upgrade screen before. Apparently you just have to get 8 hits first then do it while your sword is glowing.

I really like the main characters voice. After teaching you the basic skills, it gets challenging pretty much immediately and opens up into big ass levels where there's no single clear path to any immediately recognizable exit. You got to actually manually save in a videogame in 2014 to get through these things. Though I wish the characters didn't say "shit" and "fuck" and it was a bit more like being a goblin guy in a weird jim henson type fantasy world more, which it seems like they were maybe going for but not quite pulling off. maybe cause unreal engine games just look too much like unreal engine games. _________________

huh, I guess it shouldn't be, but I like Ring Wraithy stuff and this game has a lot of that. I also have a soft spot for orcs. I was just trying to make the lamest justifications as to why I find this playable but could never tolerate AC and I think the license is a part of that. I guess it also helps that the game is gorgeous at times.
I really don't like this brand of AAA game design. Any immersive elements are drowned out in a sea of reminders and little notifications of shit. I don't feel like I'm doing anything except stumbling over tutorials forever and ever. The disconnect between what I'm doing with my controller and what my character does also feels larger than any other game I can think of (excluding other games made like this, I mean) unless there's some horrific lag in place. Like, the game has to use a critical hit mechanic to encourage you to only press X once per attack because they know people will just zone out and mash it otherwise, but even with this "well timed attacks become critical blows" thing I have no idea what a well timed attack is because "attack" is such an abstract thing here. Pressing X can do all sorts of shit. |

Reposting here:
Love this game. I've only just reached the point where I can play Kingmaker, been too busy with side quests and random shit. Wonder if PS4 has a way to track time played for each game in your library; I expect this one will be in Top 3 when it's done.
Ah, my save file says, 31%, 27 hours. Sounds about right. _________________ Steam/PSN/Xbawks: GcDiaz

When does this happen? I've played half the story and have no recollection.
EDIT: Ah, we got our threads tangled. Parker was talking about Styx. _________________ Steam/PSN/Xbawks: GcDiaz

The highlight of the game so far for me has been fighting a dude with a mace like Sauron's from the movie (can't remember if it had gravity hammer effects in the books, is all) because I fucking love that weapon, but like all boss battles in these games you're constantly swarmed by lesser enemies the whole time which I've never enjoyed.
Just got the final (I assume?) tier of upgrades so I'm doing executions like crazy now. |

Shadow of Mordor is a story about an Uruk called Ûthûg. He was just another nameless Uruk, wandering the muddy plains of Mordor, but everything changed for Ûthûg when, during a huge running battle, he delivered a fluke deathblow to feared Ranger, Talion.
Talion had recently become some kind of half-wraith being after some fairly contrived chain of events, but this did mean that he could do awesome stuff from the very second he started strutting around Mordor with little or no explanation. He was feared and he could cheat death itself.
Ûthûg’s victory against the Ranger won him a promotion within the Uruk army. He became a captain, but his tenure almost ended swiftly as he stumbled across Talion during a routine patrol. An arrow nearly ended his life, but after some ‘field surgery’, he survived the attack, albeit with a giant scrap of metal holding his head together. Ûthûg wanted vengeance. _________________

| I had a captain that was invulnerable to all melee damage, ranged, stealth, and he had a perk that would make him just mock you and walk away if you were down in "last struggle" mode. That guy was the real legend. |

Do you have undead elf magic that bypasses that? _________________

I "branded" some other uruk and they killed him for me. It's kind of ridiculous though that he can parry me with a damn crossbow every single time I attack him, but then a low-rank uruk with a shitty sword can hit him normally. Aside from that I'm pretty sure wild caragor or this wraith flash ability would hurt him, but the wraith thing doesn't do a whole lot of damage.
This guy had a crossbow that would take out most of my life with a single shot and poison me, so I didn't want to stick around and experiment with him as much as I probably could have. He was also one of a few captains around a warchief in a fortress where you're pretty much always being swarmed, so yeah. |

So is this game worth purchasing? Bought Diablo III recently and I figure when I finish it I'll move on to either this or the Dark Souls 2 DLC. _________________

I played it for nearly 20 hours and finished it, but had mixed feelings in the end. I mean, it must've been doing something right since I finished it and I almost never finish AAA games now, but it could have been a lot better imo.
Do you like those Batman games?
Does a lack of enemy variety bother you much? It's really just a handful of Uruk types, one boss battle that isn't a dumb gimmick, and 2 types of aggressive wildlife. |

Yeah, I heard the enemy types as a general complaint, mostly in the form of "I hope you like killing orcs!"
I'm kind of indifferent to the Batman games, though people seem to be arguing that Mordor is unlike Akrham in some significant way. I will note that I got one of those deals for the Batman games and have only really played them for a few hours before getting bored.
Maybe I'll wait for a Steam sale. _________________
