I don't think anyone here has talked about these series before, but did anyone else find that the explanation for "what was going on" in Life on Mars (UK) + Ashes to Ashes considerably more unpleasant and ridiculous than the apparent lack of commitment to ever explaining what was going on?

edit: not to mention, as I was just reminded, that it kind of undermines the Life on Mars finale

I think that was probably the most realistic silencer sound effect out of any movie, tv show or game in that finale. It was nice.

I just started watching "How I Met Your Mother". I like it a lot. Great cast, most of the jokes aren't reached for. Its like a great return of the 90's sitcom. Since Saturday evening, I'm already on episode 20.

Party Down won't be renewed for a 3rd season. :(

the show was hilarious and out Officed the American Office, but yet that show will probably keep going, well after it should have ended, even after Steve Carell leaves.

No T.V. justice.

I stopped watching The Office after the mediocre 4th season. Did it ever get better, or is it continuing solely on past glory?

Party Down was pretty good but you can tell the writers hadn't done a sitcom in a while, because some of the jokes were pretty stale.

Ignoring the first season, I like The Office pretty well. It does have small chunks of boring episodes here or there, but for as long running as its been, I think its managed to be pretty darned good. If they try to keep it going without Carell or some of the other mains, it will deflate. Just like when they tried to give "Joey" his own show.

*aside from 3 or so boring episodes at the start, the current season of The Office has been pretty golden.

I've seen 2 episodes of Party down and was bored as hell.

The fears episode of Brule with pruppets was so damn hilarious I had tears. I hope the rest are as good because that was a pretty high bar to start on.

this is not going to happen but it would be awesome if this season of entourage was all about vince's psychotic breakdown after his near-death experience and he completely spiraled into insanity while everyone else enjoyed their success

unfortunately he will probably just become an adrenaline junkie and have lots of crazy adventures and in the end they will all still be BEST BROS

Guys watch Louie on FX because it is incredibly personal and unique and funny. Louie CK directs and writes and edits the show himself and seeing this level of hyper focused authorship outside of an independent film is pretty staggering. You could best compare it to Curb Your Enthusiasm or The Office but it's free-form and there are some absurd elements...

I better stop before I invoke The Wire.

Rubicon has the best opening credits I've seen in a long while. It's a shame the pilot is so lousy.

Yeah, Rubicon's an interesting premise/alternate reality at least (computer-free intelligence), but damn if they didn't hire some of their writers straight out of high school.

"He looks like someone killed his cat."
"Try wife and daughter. 9/11."

Yikes!

Honestly only watching this due to a (misplaced?) faith in AMC's quality control, based on Breaking Bad and everyone liking Mad Men.

Still watching Rubicon, still not really convinced about its quality, but there seems to be a slow burn about it, even if just about everything feels off. Or maybe due to that, I'm not sure.

And I finally finished the first season of Treme (it's been a busy summer). Khandi Alexander & Melissa Leo & Clark Peters & Steve Zahn & John Goodman & Kim Dickens, goddamn. The emmys don't deserve you anyway.

Anyone else get reallllly uncomfortable watching that scene in last night's Mad Men? I think we're going to find out some creepy stuff about Sally's relationship with her grandfather.

It's a pretty normal thing for a kid her age to do but boy oh boy that was uncomfortable to watch as all hell.

I haven't watched any of the new season yet as I only just finished season 3 a couple of days ago. But, I had a feeling this was about to happen, because the main arc of tension being built on WHY DON DO YO DO THIS and Betty's sort of privileged ignorance towards just about everything in life got all smashed to an end there. and Roger Sterling pretty much ended once he got remarried. The show actually has plenty of characters to explore, but focusing on them too much would alienate the audience that has been built. I'm interested to see what they do now.

The show is doing this weird thing where it feels like every episode this season is split 50/50 between pushing the characters to their breaking point and a "fun" caper/adventure. I think I am kind of growing tired of the characters in general though.

The "God" episode of Louie has to be one of the finest pieces of television I've seen. Tom Noonan is perfect.

and now that I'm all caught up-----I don't think it has, well maybe half the shark. It just made a major shift to the other half. Originally the show was a scarily real look into life at that time. The characters were all very interesting, each with a unique struggle that was still governed by being a period piece. That was originally a lot of why I watched the show, its such a close-up and candid view of the 50's that watching Mad Men is kind of like being able to live in that time and experience first hand things I only knew about in passing or small chunks from books.

But we also had these characters, the other half of the shark. Most of the main story arcs are finished now, so we are left with these complex characters that have been very well developed but nowhere to go in the current setting. So they cut the fat, ditched the period focus, gave them themselves the freedom of a company run by everyone and now are giving us more of these characters in situations tailored to bring this stuff out more. Now we get to watch Don deal with the fallout of his life and his choices. We now get to really see who Peggy is as she comes out of veil of her mistakes and starts to search for herself. Pete is becoming sort of an unwilling good guy. Suprise, my wife is a babe and also a really good person. And now that I'm happy at home I can go for it at work instead of sniveling and whining about why everything is going my way. I'm hoping to see more of Joan as they've hinted for awhile about some things that I'd like to see through.

One weird choice though is Betty. Even though she was the victim of Don, they've sort of made her out to be the shithead and also have ignored her for awhile. So I dunno what's up with that. I agree that from I can see, her character is used up. But I think they needed to drive home more that Don was terrible and she is better off now. Its sort of late for that now, though.

Dr. Faye Miller is quite the women.

I'm not trying to pick on you in particular Toptube, but I find the number of people who think Mad Men is the '50s kind of disconcerting.

Seriously. It's one thing to not get the pop culture references, but when there is talk of Nixon, the Kennedy Assassination and Vietnam, that's pretty messed up.

The Beatles though? Even if you aren't American I think that would be the one universal signifier. Besides the times they say the year out loud, I mean. There was an episode about New Years! Again, I'm sorry if it seems like I'm singling you out Toptube, but this has come up multiple times in conversations and it just gets under my skin.

well, you can just flip the 5 to a 6 in your mind and see what I'm saying. I miss-spoke. Off the cuff, '50s seems to come out easier I guess. It was an honest mistake, especially since I have recognized some of the pop-culture, historical, and literal mentions of the time period. The most recent being when Roger gets hot about the Japanese business men from Honda and people try to calm him down saying that its been 20 years, the world is a different place etc.

I don't think it ever got bad?

The season 3 finale had me worried because another change so soon.

But really, there wasn't much left to go with attachment to Europe so the Writers wrote themselves into a better situation. Its actually suprisingly comfortable.
