I watched the first four episodes of Rubicon.

I like it pretty well. Its a slower pace than most of the dramas out there, which is kind of nice. I can't say any one thing about it especially stands out, its the sum of its parts that makes it work well. Actually I will say the supporting characters that work at the office are all pretty great. They really do well at portraying the type of people that probably do this shit.

Right now the show is riding pretty hard one one main mystery arc, so we'll see how long it can hold out. I imagine they must have some twists or alternate arcs in store, because its meant to be a fairly long running series.

You guys seem to really like Louie. I'm not a fan of the guy based on what i've seen of him. Somebody describe it in comparison to other shows.

It's kind of maybe like Curb Your Enthusiasm or maybe sort of Britishy but every episode might have a wild swing in tone and tenor so you may have a dead serious drama or an absurd comedy both within an episode or for the length of an episode. There is a continuous thread but then maybe not and maybe we only see things through Louie's perception I guess. He kind of just sticks with an idea that someone might have in their head at any given moment and pushes it to the very edge and it seems kind of like the world is against him but he's knows it and it doesn't really phase him that much. Or maybe it's the negative image of what's left over from the Seinfeld formula that it's Always Sunny and Curb didn't use but not really.

Actually just watch an episode or two it's only twenty minutes of your life.

I think when people say the 50s they mean 1946-64 and when they say the 60s they mean the Vietnam War era.

If Louie was like other shows we wouldn't like it so much. Though if you don't like Louie CK's standup I can't imagine you liking the show that much. I think most of us who love the show also find his standup brilliant.

I don't think I've seen his stand up. But he was completely unfunny on Parks & Rec and I wasn't impressed by any of his appearances on the Daily Show.

But I guess I can spare 22 mins to check it out.

I didn't even know he was on those shows. Go download his newest standup movie, Hilarious. If you like that you'll like the show. And vice versa I suppose.

The narration, the zoom in on the drinking scene, and Satisfaction were are some of the most amateurish, on the nose, things I've ever seen Mad Men do. Good episode as far as moving the characters forward though.

Glad Venture Bros is back as well. It was fun even though this probably wasn't one of my favorites.

Maybe I'm just in a bad mood.

I thought the zoom in when Don takes a drink was pretty okay. It wasn't a long shot and any other show would have exaggerated it. The 60s is one of the most picked over decades in pop culture so it's hard to fault the show for using music we've already heard a million times. But I swear to god, if Mad Men does an All Along the Watchtower Vietnam montage, I will stop watching the show.

I have no problem with them using Satisfaction, but the episode is literally about how Don Can't Get No Satisfaction and they start it while he's narrating about how he's not satisfied with his life and they play "but he can't be a man cause he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes..." and he starts smoking. It's not as if they never use pop music, but the rare times that they do it'd never been so direct, you know?

Rubicon Episode 8 (I believe the most recent episode) strikes an interesting chord of relevancy to the current climate. The supporting characters just keep getting better, I like this show.

I started watching Deadwood again with my girlfriend. We're still in the first season, episode 4, and slowly but surely, she's easing into the grit and nastiness of the series. I still think it's probably my favorite television show of all time, there are really some moments, (I'm thinking of Season 2's Finale in particular) that are just maddeningly poetic. It's like falling in love, with your lover, all over again.

I didn't get to see Boardwalk Empire due to my cable being currently canceled at my apartment complex, and that really bothers the hell out of me.

On a separate note, if I am excited for the Game of Thrones TV series (just to get a feel), should I read the novels first? And secondly, are they any good?

Costel are you familiar with the War of the Roses in any incarnation? That's enough to watch the TV Series. I am told the novels are good but I haven't read them and just had my friend tell me about them.

Yeah, partly from my British Literature/History courses. Good enough for me. Thanks. My anticipation will continue.

Boardwalk Empire had some awful awful exposition in the first half then went into a complicated plot in the second half that kind of hinges on one blink and you miss it line. Scorsese directed the pilot so it looked great and the cast was mostly excellent. Most of my gripes feel like regular first episode growing pains, so I'm happy to give it another shot or two based on the pedigree, but with these hour long shows if I'm not feeling it soon I gotta jump off.

Yeah, Boardwalk Empire just feels a lot like HBO Drama: The Greatest Hits (or, The Name Droppening) to me.

New Orleans funeral procession: check.
"Cocksucker": check.
Gangsters: check.
Omar Little: check.
A million things reused from the Sopranos: check.

The writing's got no flow, the sets are all way too glossy, the acting's stiff. Yet another HBO show that's a little boring and definitely trying to hard; I'm beginning to wish they'd just sell David Simon to AMC so I could cancel my subscription.

Costel, the Game of Thrones books are pretty widely regarded as best-in-genre material. I really enjoyed them for what they are, anyway. There are a lot of great characters beyond just "War of the Roses rewrite" that I'm guessing won't be nearly as much fun in a condensed TV version. So my Verdict: read the first one, at which point you'll probably want to read the rest, or not.

This is what I felt like watching the trailers. Disappointed to have my suspicions confirmed.

I was really amused at all the 3 Days Of The Condor references in the most recent Rubicon ep, cause yeah, this is the same bookish-spies-caught-up-in-big-conspiracy type of setup (plus authentic NYC locations and continuity, which is nice), but way less compressed. I'm kind of into it now.

Thanks. I think I'll go scoop up the novel and then see where it takes me.

That's a shame about Boardwalk, a real shame. I was really expecting to see something great, considering the sheer talent behind the project. Maybe it will pick up? Find it's own identity hopefully.

Undercovers is, fittingly, a mattress commercial with spies.

If you were wondering.

It's the most lovingly crafted inoffensive puff of smoke I've ever seen. I kind of like the '80s style action show revival we're in, but Undercovers really needs another hook outside of the leads being unbelievably gorgeous. It's applesauce. I will honestly probably keep watching it because they are black, though.

Absolute total bummer, hearing this definitely doesn't bode well, as most critical reviews I have read assume that this is the general specificity and tone of the work as an entire, and it seems at this point inescapable. I definitely have to see it for myself though in order to judge.

Congrats Faithless!

On Deadwoood Season 2 now. Introducing Garret Dillahunt again into the series, after playing Wild Bill's assassin is one of the ballsiest movies I've ever seen, and it completely works. His nuances, and consummate dedication to a role never cease to amaze me. In Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, he easily stole the show every time. Simply fantastic.
