Everyone I just want you to know I bought Steins;gate and I'm going to play it before the end of the year. This is going to be a trying time for me and I'm going to need your support. I'm gonna let y'all know if it is good or not. I've read a book. I've seen a movie. I've played most of the video games.

Just...remember me before I went into a Dr. Pepper Time Travel Anime K-Hole and never recovered.

I watched the cartoon. Boy, it has some Things. I don't even know where to start.

Luka's probably a good place to start.

Rudie, please liveblog it here for us to enjoy.

I bought this game boxed on PC ages ago but never played it because I'm allergic to PC gaming. I'll probably play it on Vita later so I'll be joining you soon!

I've heard people say this is a real favorite game of theirs but I'm always skeptical because visual novels are garbage. How much of a garbage:actual okay stuff ratio does this game maintain?

How high is your tolerance for Visual Novel-flavor melodrama? Like, it's not KEY bad, but boy, there's some Anime Melodrama in there

Plus, you know, otaku media and trans characters dot text

I watched the animu of this, it has a few neat things lifted from scifi dropped in the usual broth.
You could play instead Life is Strange which is somewhat similar but switches the animu for pseudo american teen drama I guess.

Life Is Strange is so stupid. If you can rewind time why the fuck would you stay in college and not go to Vegas to win a million? And also pull your pants down in the most inopportune moments? Sorry, but I can not suspend my disbelief in time manipulation power stories if the characters don't act rationally.

I only watched the first episode of Stains Gate and decided it was too much animu for me.

3) Kana Hanazawa going Tuturu~

please advise if going past this comprehensive and exhaustive knowledge of this game/novel/animated program is worth it

Not saying it isn't, but I'd say it's quite better than the other thing personally.
Also there are a bunch of limitations and plot points about the use of powers that make acceptable sense.

also if you play this on the Vita, please screenshot the holy hell out of it

I demand recording every moment wherein you look at the screen like "Buh?" and making it a communal "Buh?"

I played this last year. I didn't finish it. It is very dumb, gross, and insanely padded; I finally quit when the hero takes a detour from saving the lives of his friends to help a girl* win a CCG tournament.

I'm ashamed of how long I stuck with it. I was very much hate-reading it, and after awhile I mainly wanted to see if they ever offer an alternate explanation for the dumbest bit of sham-science I have ever seen:

There is a very pretty shrine maiden who happens to have a penis. This causes great stress for the protagonist, who wants to fuck the shrine maiden so bad, but he is phobic as hell. Maybe it also troubles the shrine maiden, but their feelings aren't as important as "comedic" zoom-ins on their crotch while the protagonist pops panicky, conflicted boners.

After a series of successful attempts at sending text messages into the past the kids (one of whom is allegedly a scientific genius) decide to take things to the next level: they will alter the past and turn that dick into a pussy by sending a time-traveling email to the shrine maiden's then-pregnant mother. The email says "eat more vegetables"; there's some Japanese old wives' tale that the mother's diet determines the sex of her child. The mother obeys the command of this mysterious email and lo and behold, a new timeline is created, one where the protagonist's lust is no longer shameful. The first thing he does in this timeline is molest the shrine maiden to prove the dick is gone, because that is comedic.

After I quit I read a synopsis looking for the true explanation for this. This wouldn't be so egregious if it wasn't in a game that's 75% tech babble (the other 25% is Japanese memes). The writer must have some basic knowledge of biology. It must be that the kids are just ignorant, and there's some machine or unseen force that really did the job, right? But nope. It really was all thanks to vegetables.

So uh godspeed, Rudie. This thing is terrible.

*If I remember correctly the character is a waitress at a catgirl-themed maid cafe whose every line of dialogue ends with "nyan".

This character's personal tragedy is also directly responsible for rise of moe culture in Akihabara and its transition from "the electronics district" to "the creep district."

Not joking.

I played most of Tsukihime and a lot of Fate/Stay Night and found them atrociously written (the fan-translation didn't do them any favors). Most visual novels are probably visual novels because they aren't good enough to be regular novels.

Not at all.

Rudie let us know when you get to the part where the protag contemplates raping his female friend and then time-jumping to undo it (thanks for the spoiler ESRB!) and tell us if it's as jarring and tasteless as it sounds

Seriously though, yall know I'm not that easily offended by this or any kind of shit but the grody otaku neckbeard misogyny in S;G (the anime at least) managed to thoroughly skeeve even me out. I'd made up my mind about it after maybe the fourth or fifth time the MC "comically" sexually harrasses another character (e.g. talking down to the Ivy League-educated teen genius because she's a GIRL or spontaneously groping the transgender "trap" fetish character to "prove" if they're male or female - HAHAHAHAHA) who later falls for him but I was watching it in college with other people who were totally into it so I was stuck witnessing the pointlessly convoluted plot sputter and coil out to the very end and I can tell you with certainty: the game is almost certainly better and even that is very likely Not Fucking Worth it.

(Incidentally, Bravely Default was written by the same guy and that too managed to skeeve me out with its casual chauvanism and treatment of sexual harassment as lighthearted comedy. It's not that that can't necessarily be done - Happosai in Ranma 1/2 and Master Roshi in DBZ generally manage to be goofy but not grody - but this guy tips his hand in empathizing more with the harrasser than the harrassed, with the "laughs" coming as often from the female characters' discomfort as the inappropriateness of the perpetrator's behavior and how they reflect on him.)

Basically, just look up the IRL urban myth of John Titor, or watch Primer (or so I'm told), or better yet, forget the whole time-travel thing and watch Shigurui which was the anime director's previous, vastly superior project that didn't bring in a dime in body pillows and figurines and will never have a second season to adapt the remainder of its source material.

you realize telling me not to is the highest recommendation

it can't be but so bad, it sits on the ANN users' top ten along with other luminaries like Code Geass's second season and Clanaad

Sounds like you've already made up your mind and know exactly what you're getting into

If you must do it, the English dub is ironically slightly less cringeworthy than the original on account of downplaying some of the sleaze and giving slight hints of personality to the moe-moe archetype characters (it is still plenty cringeworthy)

As someone who's mildly curious about the genre: if Fate/Random Word, Stein's Gate and Gen Urobuchi are truly its brightest shining stars, I feel I can safely conclude I'm not missing much.

Everyone should just play Crescendo and maybe Kana: Little Sister (I say maybe because you know how you all are with lolis and little sisters, never mind that this game was published years before the moe craze).

Isn't that the porn game that's credited with popularizing the tragic little sister fetish in otakudom? (Just because a thing predates Haruhi doesn't mean it predates moe and lolicon.)

Guys let's just cut to the chase and talk about which VNs offer the best porn

Not liking the main character does not equal a bad story. You remind me of people who complain about Sugoi in Sword Art Online's second arc.

OHNOES THERE'S A PSEUDO-RAPIST IN MY ANIME

Maybe you should go watch My Little Pony instead. You know, happy stories.

The fact that you call it "porn game" shows your bias. It's obvious you're never going to like any visual novels, especially if they contain pornography of any kind.

I don't think it popularised anything, but I'm not an expert on Japan otaku culture.

Non-stupid as in, 100% serious and always showing how it's a terrible thing to do, complete with wagging finger?

People who gain power they're not meant to have can have gross thoughts like raping someone and then undoing it through time travel. It sounds perfectly acceptable to me. Also, these are thoughts. I'm sure you've had plenty of unpleasant thoughts yourself. Or should we start talking about thought crime?

A realistic, inevitable scenario, in the context of a work which has fully earned such narrative gravity and psychological grit.

The point of telling a story is to explore with fictional lives something that can never be real. Stupid, non-stupid, mind-breaking, whatever, the writer won, he made you react to the story.
