I've waited to post in this thread because it's long as ass, for one, and also I didn't quite know what to say. Now it seems we're at thread-denoument banter, which is cool, but I guess I'm gonna ruin the party by comin up in here all serious like. As a "new guy" I'm not sure how much weight my opinion carries, but then it's probably useful to have opinions from people who never did the IC thing.
I came to IC through Tim's articles, which seems to be pretty common. I didn't post on the forums, nor did I even lurk; the forums moved too fast, I was too busy, and the community was fairly impenetrable. By the time I got this desk job and some downtime, SB had been born. I hung out on LPN enough to get the gist of the drama, but basically I don't care about it.
SB is the only forum I post on. I check every forum except the Axe (moves too fast, impenetrable) and most of the threads.
Personally, I do feel a little alienated by the "gamey" threads and far more appreciate the deep-theory discussions. This probably has mostly to do with the fact that my newest system is a PS2 and my computer is four years old. Still, I like to stay on top of things and certainly would never begrudge anyone their "hey [Japanese words all look the same to me] is coming to the US" thread.
Indeed, there is no reason to curtail any kind of discussion, really. Only to engender more of the discussion that each of us wants. It's not as if the message board is going to run out of space. Frontpaging good discussions could help, but I don't have enough website administration experience to give any practical advice on how that should be done.
(Not that I read the frontpage anyway... I find out about frontpage articles through Force Feedback.)
On a general community level, I find all the people here intelligent and reasonably open-minded, with a good sense of how much and what kind of humor is appropriate for any given discussion. I've always felt welcome and never ostracized for my relative newness (well I think joe dismissively called me a Tim Rogers fanboy once, but joe will be joe). For someone who doesn't have the whole huge history of this corner of the internet in mind every time he comes to visit, you dudes are doing a damn fine job. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |
