OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD PS3 system update 1.80 has hit, and it has some pretty awesome shit in it. I can view all PSOne or PS2 games in progressive scan, and things look fucking illegally awesome. HaHAH!! Yes! Yes!

Final Fantasy Tactics, for lack of a better word, looks fucking brilliant. They did some serious techno-wizardry with this shit. It's actually in 1080p. It's pixel-perfect. It's like having a really really huge Die Hard Game Fan screenshot on the wall, only it's inside my television, and it's moving.

Don't even get me started on Dragon Quest IV!!

I've just played MAXIMUM IMPACT 2, and it looks so awesome it makes me want to die. This is the future right here, as represented by the past!

Anyway, my biggest question is -- there's this DLNA3 thing going on, where I can use the PS3 to stream/share / upscale videos stored on my computer's HDD.

Does anyone have any kind of idea how I could make that work with my Macbook Pro? I bet it would be really awesome, you know?

Also, I'd kind of like to use my Wii online, though I don't have a wireless router and kind of don't want one. Can't I share a connection wirelessly using my Macbook Pro -- or even my PS3?

Also, I want to update the firmware on my fucking PSP, which it really should let me do through the PS3 (instead of letting me configure it for Remote Play, it just says "See your PSP instruction manual for information on how to upgrade the firmware." What the fuck!), though apparently in order to do it I need to save the update file directly to a folder on my Memory Stick, which this Mac will (shockingly) not let me do!

Anyway, the purpose of this thread is to suggest to me PSOne/PS2 games that might look FUCKING AWESOME on this TV through 1080p.

If I were somehow able to come over to your place tomorrow and I could bring just one game to see on this bad boy setup, I'm sure I'd pick Rez.

tim, you should try something that has pre-rendered backgrounds--to see if it works. like parasite eve or something.

also, can anyone confirm this upscaling working at 720p also? my 22 inch monitor maxes out at 1680x1050 (see: not 1080p).

Tim. do us a favour and post a photo. I can't even fathom what a pixel-perfect 2D game in 1080p on your television would be like—other than such tired phrases as "humptacularly awesome" and "bodaciously spanktastic."

So... does it upscale the polygons or just resize the afterimage?

i played an armored core demo yesterday at target and i was pleased.

If sixaxis gets rumble and the price drops to $400, i'm in.

i will probably get a PSP2 first.

lestrade: i'll try to get a non-blurry photo up soonish.

it'll probably be of FF Tactics. as rudie will no doubt agree, that shit looks absolutely religion-inducing. this thing has just elevated the PSOne game to the status of ART.

PS2 games, not so much so. still, hey.

gonna try saga frontier in a minute, to check on the prerendered backgrounds.

overall, yeah, games with mixtures of sprites and slightly textured polygons are where it's at. and this is precisely why i will purchase BREATH OF FIRE IV and XENOGEARS as soon as possible, for awesomeness purposes.

I'm no expert, though I imagine this is upscaling. It says in the firmware description that it's "upscaling" -- which it is also doing for DVDs now, as well.

They did a tentative PS1/PS2 graphical fix back on version 1.50 or so, and it didn't look nearly as good as this. Really, it looks fucking great.

also worth noting, is this update contains a fix for brightness issues that many were experiencing when using HDMI to DVI cables. the black levels were appearing washed out and too bright.

there is now a setting in the XMB for HDMI full range or something like that.

comparison shots are pretty dramatic.

good job sony.

Here's what Tomba looks like on the PS3 in 1080p, through HDMI. The TV is a 40 inch Samsung LCD.

I popped in MGS3 and it's looking *fantastic*.

The fix they popped in an update or so ago just cleaned up the scaling to regular PS2 levels... but this!

I think it may actually render the polygons at higher scale. I would imagine that MGS3 would look a lot worse if they didn't. I looked at a bunch of the crates, and the boxes don't look like jagged messes like they would if they were upscaled only.

Question: Did you do the whole PSP through USB cord -> USB mode hooked to the Powerbook thing for the PSP, Tim? Or did you just pop the memstick in a slot on the system itself? Also, what firmware are you on? You might want to update to the OE firmware so you can do all sorts of fun things with it.

Of course this is fine and dandy if you have a REAL PS3 i.e. an American or Japanese system but for those with FAKE PS3s i.e. Europeans/Australians/The Middle East this firmware update means nothing since we have shitty backwards compatibility.

The upscaling + smoothing on KoF 2003 makes it look great.

...when the fighters aren't actually fighting.

Try to actually play it and one will likely notice horrible combing issues with the picture, as it would appear that the PS3 has a crappy deinterlacer.

Turning on progressive scan disables the scaling and smoothing.

Blargh and such.

Yes, you can do internet connection sharing with your MBP. Here's the procedure for OS X.

Yeah.

I tried this. I got this far:

Code:
Gather Information:

    * Open Terminal.app and type ifconfig en1. In the output...
          o Look for: inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask ...
o Take note the IP Address (the x's) associated with the first inet (mine was 10.0.2.1; yours may be different).
    * Type dig. Near the bottom of this output will be SERVER: followed by an IP address. This will be the DNS server you will use for your DS.

. . . and when I type "iconfig en1", it keeps telling me "command not found".

I've now managed to get my PS3 and PSP able to share with the MBP, though!

I assume that if I can get the DS to work, I can get the Wii to work?

tim, it's "ifconfig" or "/sbin/ifconfig" or "sudo /sbin/ifconfig" (if you're unlucky)

also: WTF getting TCIP/IP settings from the terminal… I bet some kind of nerd wrote those instructions.

Note that this should be 'ifconfig en1'. Hope that's a typo on your part, but whatever if it works. Look at me I'm a jackass.

Logically, yes. Theoretically, yes. They should all (PS3, PSP, Wii, DS) work the same way as far as sharing goes; if they see an open, unsecured wireless network, then bam you're online. Logically.

god damn it it's seriously taking like five minutes to load each page of this fuckin' forum.

anyway.

hah yeah i figured that out as soon as i posted that shit!

yeah, so i put all the proper IP addresses into my Wii, and . . . uhh . . . then it says it can't connect, and to make sure the IP addresses are correct. i go back and look at the IP addresses, and . . . what the fuck? there are a whole bunch of zeroes added to them, to make them twelve digits.

like, the "gateway" is supposed to be "10.0.2.1", and the Wii is forcing it to "100.000.002.001" whenever i click "save".

this is kind of fucking hateful!

Hm.

still doesn't work.

the instant i click "test connection" it pops up with an error.

someone help :(

i'm not using security or anything. if i try to setup a WEP key on the MBP, the Wii tells me that the code is wrong no matter how right it is.

this is kind of driving me nuts!

Your Wii is obviously jealous of your PS3s upscaling graphic beauty.

If you've got twenty bucks, you could always buy that USB dongle thing.

i wouldn't dare pay twenty bucks for some fuckin' dongle!

either way, after repeating the same settings and clicking "GOOOOO" about three hundred times, it finally works.

. . . man. this is kind of disappointing, though. what the fuck did i do this for?

i'm sorry: nintendo has seriously dropped the ball on the virtual console. there are no new super famicom games in the pipeline (according to the nintendo jp homepage), and none have been released in over a month. what a fuckin' joke.
