I've got a visual blog. One that gets updated 3 times a week or more or less with new drawings from talented and not so talented artists.

You should check it out.

Neato, I didn't know you guys set up an art/visual blog as well. Wonderfully solid stuff!

You know, for a while, I've wondered how I would've turned out had I gone to a fine arts animation program instead of a tech school, who I would've hung out with, where my style would've went. They're completely different worlds, each with their own sets of pros and cons. You guys get alot more time and freedom with your projects.

If I ever go for a Masters, it will be a fine arts one, and it sure as hell won't be from an Art Institute.

Aww what the hell, might as well post it since I just made an update last night...

Loki, damn you and your DS pirating ways :) Which Bleach DS game are you playing? I have the first one, and need more people to play VS with, if you have access to DS-capable internets.

I think what you're looking for is Fort90's blog. He manages to write long things about interesting things, pretty gosh danged regularly:

Again, thanks for the mention Psiga.

I'm actually pretty happy, and proud, that a few SBers check out my site. In fact, when one person here said it was their inspiration to pursue video game journalism professionally, and that person is now making a living from it, I couldn't have been happier. Which I guess leads to...

And how long have you been doing it for?

What's a good way to keep it maintained? I've sorta got a thing where I'll sit down to write a single post and six pages will spill out. Because of that, I wind up not writing so much because I sorta don't want to be there all night sometimes.

I've been doing my fort90 blog for a little over three years now. I first had a LJ back in 2002 I believe... my best friend's new girlfriend at the time had one, and I was all "what's that?" and it went from there. Since I was unemployed at the time, and wasn't that involved with video game journalism, it was your typical blog; random stories from my everday life, more or less.

I then became homeless and a lot of other stuff happened, so the LJ was shoved aside for more important things. Once things got stable, I felt the need to write about, but for some reason, didn't want to pick up from where I left off, so I opened up my LJ, but made everything up. Started small, but by the end, I was telling folks that I was building a robot out of old Sega hardware, had psychic powers, and a mutant alligator man programmed by Bill Clinton was after me. TOLL still remembers it to this day!

After a while, I ran out of steam (it was simply a writing exercise that served its purpose at the time, though I kinda want to pick up from where I left off), and occupied myself with other things. I then decided to create my own website, which would be an online portfolio. A few months later, my webmaster and goof friend suggested I started a blog, which at that point I wasn't too keen on, because everyone had a blog, and yada, yada, yada... In the end, I went "why not" and gave it a shot. Which was a very good move. Because as I would discover, not only did it help keep my skill sets sharp, but allowed me to attract a lot of work I maybe could not have gotten otherwise (and not just writing about games, either).

I do a lot of public speaking these days, and often I'm asked the best way to crack into the game journalism field. One must have is a blog; its like a constantly growing, evolving resume.

I guess it's a game|blog, like many others have; it's (or at used to be) 60-70% video game related, the rest was talk about movies/comics/cartoons, other bullshit from the web, and stuff from my personal life. Overtime I began to develop a reputation, or identity if you will, for having the surly New Yorker's attitude towards video games. And sprinkled with my day to day dealing with homeless people and stupid shit like that, I kinda positioned myself as a Harvey Pekar-type persona, which was never planned, but just happened, and allowed me to get my foot in the door. So the point here is the blog helped me develop a voice for, I hate to use the term, but for "marketing" purposes.

What I used to do is surf both the Gaming Age Forums and the Insert Credit Forums. Aside from their users, both had its own brand of information, which I then collected and presented together on my blog, and in the end, each side would learn something they didn't before, due to the nature of being part of just one culture. This again helped me immensely when it came to attracting work.

Though it was just mindlessly sitting and surfing and cutting and pasting. I always tried to infuse everything my own two cents. Regarding the actual nuts and bolts, as anyone who's familiar with my posts can tell you, my entries are pretty LONG. What I like to do is have a mix of everything, not just games, but all the other stuff I've been into. Several editors have noted that this is not the best way to do things. There have been instances in which I was the very first person to "break" something, but it was lost in the shuffle. But I know folks enjoy my conversational tone to what I present, hence why I haven't changed.

I started small, but as time went on, my readership grew and grew and grew. These days, I'm pretty damn proud of the number of people that hit my site. And in the end, I ended up getting a full-time writing gig as a result. As some folks might also know, I know write for the blog at Zedge. But instead of video games, cell phones are my focus.

I ain't gonna lie; the job is fucking sweet. All I really do is surf the web for stuff to talk about, or simply ramble on and on to my heart's content if I wanted. It also helps that my approach seems to be rather unique in the world of cell phone blogging. But it can be a challenge to find new stuff to talk about on a constant basis. I've had to do things a bit different from before; first and foremost, more frequent and shorter posts.

I guess the biggest pain in the pass is how I can't spend as much time as I did as before on my fort90 blog. Before I got the professional blogging gig, I did most of my writing at my crummy 9-5, sit at the desk to earn a paltry paycheck while I did real work on the side-type gig. So my fort90 posts are not as frequent. Which, on a personal level, is disappointing. But one man can only write so much.

It's also why I really don't frequent gaming boards all that much anymore. And as a result, I am woefully out of touch when it comes to gaming. Which, to be honest, has allowed me to enjoy video games a bit more, if you catch my drift, but that's an entirely different discussion.

I... hope there was a point to everything I wrote, other than stroking my own ego.... sorry about that. Once again, blogging can be a living if you stick with it and know what you’re doing!
