I hit on an apple store girl today, kind of, while my boss was buying a couple macbooks for company purposes.
At any rate, yeah.. Um. I guess I'm a mac owner now.
Recommend me some software that I MUST have.
Adium is the best aim client, right?
What about for mail?
annd... FTP? _________________

This is a nice client, assuming you use Firefox instead of Safari/other. |

Mail.app is a pretty damn nice mail client.
Transmit is the king of FTP, or you can use lftp if you want to be a command line nerd.
You absolutely must have Quicksilver, though I can't explain why it's something you just have to try for yourself, man! Also Growl, which comes bundled with Adium now I think. |

| I made a big list of mostly-mac software that appeals to me here. Didn't scope more general things like IM clients, though. |

Photo Booth is fun! And yeah, this screen is super nice. I also enjoy this keyboard. It's my first widescreen laptop.
Anyone know if I can get DiVX support in frontrow? _________________

| Cyberduck is a good free FTP client. For good codec support in Quicktime/FR, google Perian - you'll want the beta, probably. |

perian.org - this is a quicktime component (quicktime is frontrows backend) that will play just about anything you throw at it.
The problem with front row, is that it only looks for movies in /Users/yourname/movies, but you can put a shortcut in that folder to wherever you prefer to store your movies and such in and it'll show that shortcut in the menu.
Also, for bit-torrent I'd recommend being a nerd and using the command line btlaunchmanycurses.py - not as un-userfriendly as it sounds, you just give it a folder and it checks it for .torrents and adds them / removes them accordingly. There's also Transmission that used to be banned but recently got fixed and trackers like it now. I wouldn't recommend Azureus, it's still horrible java nonsense that will quickly absorb all your memory regardless of OS. |

| I use Azureus on my Mac and it's always behaved just as well as it has on my PC, which is to say not as well as utorrent but still I'm willing to trade 100MB of RAM for its features. (I use Azureus on my PC, still, too, so!) |

The later versions offload a lot of the GUI stuff to the OS, so it's a lot snappier than it used to be.
Also, hey, it's a java app. What are you gonna do? |

We use a neat little FTP app called Fetch at work.. Seems to work well. I have no clue whether its free or not though.
Also, someone sent me a link to Pencil -
http://www.les-stooges.org/pascal/pencil/index.php?id=Download
a free little painty/anigif/vector-art app. The windows one runs ok..not tried the mac version yet. |

Kappuru you are like an American Tim.
Admium is nice. Handbrake is cool.
There's a maintenance script widget somewhere to be found which is nice.
Don't forget to download all the software updates first. It will make your life easier.
And BitsonWheels is a nice torrent client, but you can't select which files you want to download with it. _________________

How exactly am I an american tim? Tim is whiter and more all-american than me! Also, I'm really not like him. I think you should look over at Rud13 more.
Thanks for all the help guys. I'm adjusting to this quite well! And hey, PC guys, Safari came out for Windows today! _________________

Kappuru your command of the facts can't be denied. And yes Rud13 is more of an "American Tim" than you.
Also I'm glad there's another Mac user around here. To celebrate Steve Jobs WWDC keynote we should all swear off meat, and make jokes about vista's pricing structure. _________________

So the Mac version of Safari 3 beta is crazy fast.
They also changed form widgets too, probably to match the rest of leopard? |

Kap App Zapper is also good. Gooktime I must try this when I get home. When I install it, will it remove the old Safari. What exactly happens? I'm so dependent on Safari for my all my interweb needs. _________________

Boot Camp is just a BIOS mod that lets Windows boot. So you're booting Windows. It's Windows on Intel hardware. It runs as well as the hardware runs it.
The 24" iMac with the 256MB GeForce 7600 GT lets you run Half-Life 2 / other Source Engine games at native 1920x1200 with 4xAA and 4xAF at solid 60fps (HDR turned off). That machine can also run Quake 4 at mostly 60 with 2xAA. This the machine I'm using right now.
The 20-inchers have a more pitiful ATI card that can push 30-45 at the native 1680x1050 in those games. Weaker fillrate means you'll probably have to go without AA for a more stable frame rate. |

Yeah, it replaces Safari.app and presumably some internal stuff as it requires a reboot. The .dmg has an uninstall package though, so you can revert back to regular Safari.
I've not had any problems so far, though I'd wager a lot of third party plugins etc. don't work. It's noticeably faster in every way. |

I really prefer Camino for browsing the web.
Transmission is my bittorrent-client of choice, because it's slim and looks nice.

Camino is damn nice especially the beta that uses the same font rendering stuff as Safari.
I might just have to use Safari though if the final is this fast and ditch my newsfire/camino combo. |

Yeah.
Leopard is going to be even more consistent in that respect, they're dropping the half a dozen or so different window styles they have in play right now and going for one unified look across the board.
So how are you liking being a MAC USER? |

| So I am trying Camino out right now, and so far liking it. My only questions is if there is a way to change the buttons on say SB so that they are the SB buttons and not the Mac buttons, if you know what I mean. |

Azureus is garbage, never support crap that doesn't feel like a proper Mac app.
Photodrop Widget:
http://www.dropping.at/
Take screenshots (so its like a crop tool) then drag them off to the desktop/email whatever… OR!
drag them onto the image upload widget
http://www.modelconcept.net/image-upload-widget/
and send them to image shack with the address put in your clipboard. (also works with normal files etc)
Adium (Best IM Client ever, so clean)
Textmate (Nothing competes with this on any platform)
CSSEdit
Transmit
The Unarchiver (For 7zip/rar/etc)
Omnigraffle
Disk Inventory X (Looks like crap but is useful if your disk is full to find that 4gig disk image you forgot to delete)
"They also changed form widgets too, probably to match the rest of leopard?"
Nah its so that they're more customisable for web developers, colour change etc. _________________

Cocoa helps alot, but consistency is just something Mac developers pay more attention to.
CSSEdit for example features only a few standard Cocoa elements (customisable toolbars and the search field, lets remember that you rarely see customisable toolbars in windows and when you do they rarely listen to you like IE/outlook) it also features a ton of custom elements like the accordion control, its document tabs and the HUD windows, yet it feels like a perfect OS X citizen because the UI choices mirror things seen in iLife and work/feel like you expect them to. Even the tabs mirror the new safari 3 dragable tabs perfectly.
Shortcuts are always consistent, Preferences are always in the application name menu and always command+, as a shortcut so no more digging about in edit/file/view/tools like you do in windows because its in a different place in every windows app.
Things like that really, its all just attention to detail and conventions.
Inquisitor for Safari
http://www.inquisitorx.com/
Set up some shortcuts in it, for me typing "Dogs" then hitting shift+return will google image search "Dogs"
I can't browse the net without this now. _________________

Kap if you ever miss windows you can get parallels and be like John Vernon. I have a copy of XP pro at home that I'm considering doing that with. I kind of don't want to fuck up my macbook with Windows though. _________________

This is weird. How the fuck did they do this? I mean, it feels twice as fast as Firefox. Seriously. Man. I never used Safari before, though I guess I have to, now!
Also, I use Azureus for torrents and CyberDuck for FTP.
CyberDuck is the best! Give it a shot. _________________

JUst posting to say that I've finally gotten iChat up and running, after owning this computer for over six months.
Yay!
Kappuru, please confirm that yours is the MBP with the LED screen?
i'm cleaning up my computer right here and now. getting rid of some shit. i currently have THREE (three!) icons on my desktop, for example.
anyway, hey! can we talk about widgets? why doesn't the weather widget work for tokyo? i'm not even kidding when i say i reallllllllly wish it did.
did you guys see all the leopard sneak preview stuff? man, being able to turn any piece of a website into a dashboard widget sounds kind of iffy on paper, though when you really think about it, it's kind of cool! you can just go into the widget maker and drag and drop a rectangular line around the first review on actionbutton.net -- picture, text, and all -- and that will become a widget, updated in real-time, with the links clickable and everything.
that's web three point oh kids

Strange. I just set the weather widget to "Tokyo, Japan(Tokyo)" and it says it's 75°F over there. |
