Joe go to San Francisco and then Monterrey Bay Aquarium for Churippu. San Diego is a charmless place and the only thing cool about it is that is close to Tijuana.

SF is pretty awesome, Monterey is very pleasant. I fully support this endeavor.

If you do go to Monterey, try to hit the aquarium on a weekday. It's nowhere near as cool when overcrowded and full of screaming children and you can't see the sea otters during their feedings : (

Scripps Institute has a really nice aquarium too. In my opinion it's better than Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Catalina Island has some great snorkling/swimming if you don't mind cold water. When I went out there dolphins swam around the boat and it was generally pretty awesome. There was a fire there recently so I don't know how the rest of the island has fared. I hope the bison are okay :(

and yes, scripps is awesome. the area around the scripps reasearch institute in san diego has some of the best waves in the state, country and world.
