this is a much better white stripes album than 'get behind me satan'. sounds like jack has a lot more confidence and range in his voice, but this cuts down on the wailing a bit.

I've only listened to it a couple of times. I think it's my favorite Stripes so far though. _________________

"Little Cream Soda" is my favorite track on this album. Overall the album is great, but that song is just awesome. However, I really dislike the last track. Sounds like the Dukes of Hazard theme. _________________

Yeah, I've been listening to this for a couple of days if you know what I mean.
It's really polished! Which is weird. I think Jack performed more studio trickery on this album than on all of his other albums combined. Songs like "You don't know what love is" feel a hell of a lot like what The Raconteurs were going for and failing to reach: simple, melodic pop music with a more all-around sophisticated robustness.
Also, though he's used it plenty of times before, Jack's use of the Whammy IV pedal here is pretty sublime. He really manages to blend the eclectic sounds together exceptionally well here. Man! You'd think by now he'd manage to make that electronic-like extreme-high-note shit stereotypical by now. I guess not!
Man, it makes me want to buy a Whammy pedal. Maybe I should. Hmm. I tried one out in the shop the other week, and even without a hell of a lot of skill, I could feel the possibilities.
I like how Jack can switch from playing his guitar to stabbing you with it so effortlessly. It's a really nice, simple, deep dynamic. _________________

Me too. Marimbas are never used on any records and jack white had the will to find a way to use one.
Aside from My Doorbell, and all other assorted goodness, I love that song that ties it all together White Moon.
And that groove on Take, Take, Take is priceless. So much good music on that record. _________________

thanks step!
also I did not like get behind me satan much.
yeah this album is great. I've listened to it a lot;it's an album of great singles and two-legged tracks. "Prickly thorn, but sweetly worn" and "St. Andrew (this battle is in the air)" being an example of an excellent two-legged track. "Rag and bone" man, I'm importing the 7" single that shipped with that June NME now. |

I'm giving it a second listen. First time, I enjoyed it, but nothing STUCK, you know? It's been a while since I've sat down with what some would call "rock music" so maybe I'm a bit out of the loop in that regard. _________________

Here's some shit I got to thinking:
300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues is a good Dylan-esque song
You Don't Know What Love Is sounds like a song the Black Crowes should have and could have written year's ago, but Jack does it better. He doesn't need the fucking Racoon Tours, he can just write songs like this once and a while.
Baby Brother (itunes bonus shiznit yo) is fucking awesome rockabilly
Yay for bagpipes, and the cover of Conquest.
Meg Whites drums are tolerable. There should be video of the jumblies bouncing while she drums included with the album.
7 out of 4 stars. An instant classic. Rock isn't dead..
Out of all their albums it might be their second or third best. That British one is still pretty awesome. _________________

Here are my thoughts:
-probably the best lyrics Jack has written
-but the songwriting sucks
-but the guitar playing is fucking awesome
-in fact, this album maybe ROCKS harder than any other white stripes record
-but the songwriting still sucks -- it feels like an excuse to show off guitar solos (which are good, but not that good
-the cover of conquest is amazing
-seconding the desire for a video of meg's jubblies
all in all it's not as good as get behind me satan... but then, what is? _________________

I got this yesterday, and I've really been digging it. Definitely good rock n roll. So-so lyrics, but some wicked guitar playing from Jack.
Meg's drumming is Meg's drumming. Wouldn't really be tolerable in any other band, but it's a part of the sound of The White Stripes, you know? It suits Jack's vocals and guitar.
Every track is pretty good. It's one of those "insert and press play" albums, where you never really get the urge to skip a track.
I like Rag and Bones a lot. |

I would say that it is better, but not quite as good as the self titled, or White Blood Cells. _________________ The people are like wool to me |

| I listened to this all the way through in a music store the other day. I can't say i've ever been a real fan of their music, so this was a nice suprise. one of the songs reminded me of dead leaves on the dirty ground, I like that song. I might buy this next time i'm out, $10 bucks is a good price. |

Ok, I've got about a dozen listen-tos under my belt now and... well, it's possibly my least favorite?
Long story short: i forgot to buy get behind me satan when it came out, and liked their other albums so much I never got around to it. I got both this and iky thump on the same day so I've listend to them both about the same amount of times and I think that gbms is better overall. IkyThump feels like it's whitestripes trying to find a new sound but old whitestripes keep poking their heads out either in vocal pitch or individual riffs. I don't know shit about music (and really love Elephant) so feel free to ignore these comments.
Aside: Conquest is brilliant. Seriously. The shining jewel of the CD. _________________

I was thinking about De Stijl and decided that Icky Thump is about as good, maybe a bit more cohesive, but not really better. _________________ The people are like wool to me |

Pitchfork interviews White Stripes about Icky Thump
Fairly good interview. Talks about the origin of the name "Icky Thump", which I never bothered to look into. Also talks about Jacks singing ability since he quit smoking cold turkey. _________________

The phrase "the songwriting sucks" is pretty broad in this context, and I'm not quite sure what you mean. I'm listening to 300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues at the moment and the last thing it seems like is an excuse to play some nasty blues licks. Perhaps it's a little bit of a "I love overdubs!" showpiece, but I hear that song and think "Goddamn, Jack White has absolutely perfected the White Stripes' approach to dynamics" It's crazy how the song is all mp to ffff
to p... and it does it all JUST jarringly enough to remain surprising and not annoying every time.
It is just honing that typical "White Stripes" style, but that sounds like songwriting to me. |

can we not fucking use overrated? How about, "I don't agree with popular opinion." Or I don't like this band that much. Almost everything is subjective yada yada. |
