Oh my God, what is wrong with these comics? They're all so thoroughly emo and terrible, and they have nothing to look at.

edit: pop toast (I always wanted to do that)

I think it's pretty obvious that Fred hates Megatokyo. I mean, Megatokyo basically killed every one of his other projects. And he can't "finish" Megatokyo, because when he does, he will be a 40-year old junior architect that wasted 10 years of his professional life. Oh well.

So, like this?

(Also, rumours abound that our friend Pete Abrams is in a slightly similar fix.)

I think Piro is a slave to the comic. He can never quit it without pretty much ruining all of his income. Even if he hates it (which for some reason I suspect he does), he couldn't really quit. I guess at least he's not working 'for the man' or whatever.

My bro said the same thing a while ago, and actively believes Fred hates the strip right now. Curious. Also, Fred yelled at my brother once in the forum for calling him "Freddy Boy"

Mostly, I can't stand how blindly devoted the fans are. The man frequently misses updates, takes forever with his story, etc. and yet every update gets a "great strip Fred" remark from the fans. There's simply no room for criticism of the man and his work among them.

I've also thought a lot about how he updates. I always trashed him for it, comparing him to PA (which love them or hate them, is consistent with updates despite their many other projects). Piro always uses the excuse that he is not a professional, that the main focus for him now are the books, blah blah blah. I always responded to this with "then stop publishing it online a strip at a time", but I guess there's really nothing stopping him from doing it, or for a reader to ignore the online version and buy the books. I guess my stance softened a bit, though I still think it shows a lack of responsibilty and legitimacy.

Also, I hate Dom more than Piro. At least Fred is honest about what's going on with his troubles. Dom can only write "look how awesome I am writing about anime for magazines and going to Japan and playing Big Bang Beat. And no, you can't have my tickets to awesome game event #50 ... :p"

I think Piro's very weakness and patheticness is a large part of his appeal. He is an almost Kafka-like (minus the talent) prophet of self-hate.

I really can't bring myself to hate Fred Gallagher, though he makes it very easy and tempting to do so. I suppose it is harder to hate someone's work whenever they do such a poor job of actually getting it out there.

Exactly. Any trash talk that I might have for the guy is not hatred in any way. It's a minor marvel that he has found so much success with, uh, so little talent. Goes back to my "American equivalent of Densha Otoko" assessment.

On one of them you can see a nipple. And/or some girls totally are in their undies. OMG

The giftarts he got from like-minded online japanese artists were more daring though.
Of course 4chan rumormongers keep thinking there's other, more embarassing stuff that hasn't leaked yet.

Honestly the most embarassing stuff you can see by digging through his old art is that he actually had quite a few plot ideas, only the comic is so sluggish he hasn't managed to get to them yet.

If anything, the guy gets alot of respect for driving the truck into the water, if you get the idea.

Maybe because his main source of inspiration is visual novels, that are 6 hours of text for 30 minutes of plot.

Also, I don't think I can see a nipple drawn by Piro. His anatomy is crummy enough already.

One reason he's difficult to hate: it's hard for someone to be too high-and-mighty about their success when its vehicle is centered about a socially awkward, pathetic avatar of themselves. (I wanted to confirm this, and what do you know, I look at the latest comic and Piro's nervously freaking out about something, complete with wide eyes.)

I think if you dig around encyclopedia drammatica for long enough you can find his loliporn.

I recommend not doing it as it's quite depressing.
