I linked that article to Toups via PM a month or two ago. It is interesting.
It boils down to being able to spot the people who are trying to game the system. Whether it's an unspoken, "Oh, you have rules? Let's see what annoying shit I can do that does not technically break those rules..." (vinny), or sometimes even a flatly proclaimed, "I am going to do the opposite of your rules. What are you gonna do about it?" (icy). From there, you either calmly stifle them until they leave (or get flustered enough to break the rules), or assertively draw and maintain a line just for them (congratulations, you are a unique little snowflake).
Follow-through is huge. Anything related to reward or punishment doled out by a "higher power" is most effective with prompt follow-through. That was one of the huge killers with IC stuff, since it'd take us days or weeks to come to a decision and that decision was only randomly carried out. _________________

Yeah, I shouldn't have said 'rules', really. When we had trouble with Dreamcast Guitar Amp Guy, and I casually wrote out some unofficial guidelines to help him along, it was because I knew darned well that rules are made for bendin' and breakin'. _________________
