You know, I was going to mention gelato last night, but just ended on the custard note. My local Whole Foods has a really nice gelato bar, and I love to get their mango gelato. It's just right.
There's a gelato specialty place a mile or two away from my house, but honestly the only thing I've liked from them is their raspberry sorbet.

Think of an extremely smooth icecream, made with extra cream, and a bit of egg yolk. It's like 10% butterfat. It's not kidding around. _________________

You know how in those h-mangas the girl says "it's so rich and creamy"?

Here in Ohio there's a place called East Coast Custard which I consider simply divine!
Their birthday cakes are the best most dense bite ever. They spoiled me from normal cakes for like 3 months!
Nothing like a giant concrete block of custard after a night of liquor. Mmmm...bailey's irish creme custard.
I'd talk more of Gelato, but I have to eat all the flavors from the little italian eatery I just discovered down here. _________________

Gelato is where it's at, though I really like Haagen-dazs' coffee ice cream (especially the coffee/crunch bars), and I'm pretty sure Ben & Jerry's Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream is the best mass-market ice cream out there.
Coldstone is overpriced and I think, for the most part, I'd rather have a DQ Blizzard or even a McFlurry.
But in general: ice cream is awesome. _________________

I've been wanting to buy this Americone flavor, but I've yet to see it anywhere around here.
I've always liked B&Js celebrity themed ice creams _________________

I had some Cold Stone once. Nothing special or remarkable, but then again, I guess I didn't go wild with toppings or anything.
It shut down recently, though (my friend had a stack of coupons that I guess are wasted now). Another friend of mine claims the location has a pretty bad rep, and that some guy killed every person in the store when it used to be another ice cream joint.
For the most part, though, I stick to Amy's Ice Cream. They're dotted all over Austin, and aren't too bad (though you pay a fair deal for it; student discounts help a bit).
I don't know, though. It's all too sweet for me. Most places ignore my request for a small ice cream (oops lol sorry dude that'll be $6), and finishing it off makes me really sick. I know there's an obvious solution to that problem, but I hate to just throw it out.
I'll give this to Cold Stone, though; they've got some slick ads on TV. |

I passed by a Pinkberry, which I think is a rip-off of Red Mango, in Venice. I looked at the prices and decided not to go inside. Was this a mistake? _________________

I've never had this stuff. I only first heard of it in this thread; then I saw a store while wandering around the other day.
Describe it to me in relative terms. |

Not as good as Ben & Jerry's, but better than pretty much anywhere else, and you can get exactly what you want instead of canned flavors. Too expensive. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Oh.
That sort of intrigues me.
When you say "get exactly what you want", you mean... what, they have a bunch of ingredients that they slap together into an ice cream base to make the flavor you want? |

| Yeah you can get like sweet cream or strawberry or vanilla or cheese cake or like a bunch of other flavors and then they have a bunch of mix ins like peanut butter and fudge and oreos and graham cracker crust and a bunch of fruit and stuff like that and they mash it all up (on a cold stone, no less!) and put it in a bowl. It's pretty fucking delicious. |

The icecream is really thick and stretchy. It's vaguely reminiscent of a dough or taffy. You choose a base flavor, request toppings, then the person takes a hearty gooey dollop of the stuff, stretches it out a bit on the stone counter, dumps the toppings in, and folds it into itself a few times.
I mean, you might as well go there once just to see the process. Share a cup with the ladyfriend if applicable.
It's different kind of icecream than the stuff you'd get from 31 Flavors, DQ, or TCBY. You can get more delicious icecreams at the same price or less from boutique creameries, but it's a step up from the other chain stores.
Also, I take a modicum of offense at the relation of Cold Stone to Whole Foods. I'd take some Whole Foods mango gelato over Cold Stone icecream any day. _________________

Pinkberry is pretty good in its own right.
I like Red Mango better.
Either way, we're dealing with yogurt. It's just . . . delicious. And actually good for you. And you can get some fresh blueberries (or cranberries!!) in there, with corn flakes!
Man, Korea has it made. Red Mango, amazing cheap noodles, actual pizza, Dunkin' Donuts. Go Korea.
There's a Cold Stone by the movie theater where I'm seeing Die Hard 4.0 with the girl-friend tomorrow. I might as well try some. From the sound of it, it's just Turkish-style ice cream. Which is really great stuff. Anyone who says they "can't tell the difference" between Turkish ice cream and Ben and Jerry's probably also can't tell the difference between Blu-ray and VHS, or anuses and vaginas. I guess they'd be content to live the rest of their days subsisting on maple syrup licked from filthy sofa cushions.
Hmm.
So, to recap: Red Mango is the king of all cold and delicious snack foods. It's about six dollars for a bowl large enough to mix bread dough, filled to the rim with yogurt and delicious fresh toppings. _________________

Psiga, you are an excellent person/poster.
Cold Stone is superior to B&J's in my book. More non-choco flavors, and I don't like chocolate. (GASP) _________________

At one time or another there has been both a Cold Stone and a Marble Slab here in this town of Birmingham, AL. Of the two, I think that only Cold Stone has survived, but I can't really say as I've never been to it. I hadn't been to Marble Slab either until very recently, when I was taken to one while on a beach trip in Destin Florida with some kind folks who held the opinion that Marble Slab was vastly superior to Cold Stone.
I may have to see if either of those places are still in town so that I can form an opinion of my own on this subject.
One thing that I remember about Marble Slab was that even the regular, small plastic cup seemed like it was just way too much. I should have ordered the kid's size because the ice cream is overwhelming after too many bites. _________________ Taking a break. |

At work the other day one of the girl mobs was hanging around my desk gushing about different brands and flavors of ice cream in the way girl mobs do and eventually came to green tea flavored mochi ice cream... it was a very wapanese moment... I have not tried this ice cream yet. |

Going to say here that Japanese people usually don't like green tea flavored ice cream. Really is sort of a wapanese thing. |

I only tried Mochi once. Tasted like freezer. Horrible texture. Flavors didn't mesh. I guess I'd need to taste some good stuff from a great brand or shop. _________________
