Grindhouse would have made more money if it had been rated PG-13...

Which is probably something Tarantino/Rodriguez heard at length before rolling their eyes in a synchonous fashion. Cutting back on the gore, violence and profanity would be dishonest to the fans and a form of pandering. Fuck the MPAA and all that shit.

Now, Live Free or Die Hard is something else. For anyone worried about the violence, it's still there. Only will less blood. The fisticuffs and bizzarely entertaining deathtraps are still there. Only with less swearing. McClaine is still the grizzled ex-80s antihero icon. Only with less hair. I've been trying to find fault with this movie since I saw it earlier this afternoon. For as bad as it could have been, it's the best movie-movie I've seen all year. It makes me bad for seeing Spider-Man 3, even though that had Bruce Fucking Campbell in it.

The action is abundant and varied. The story well paced and breezy to sit through. I imagined sitting through I was one of the dozen or so 13-15 year olds I saw in the theater today. I assumed they/I haven't seen any of the previous Die Hard movies. It held together well, and with the title change (Die Hard 4.0 to LFoDH) it's practically a rebirth of the franchise, except that is stilled starred Bruce Willis. There are the nods to the other movies (there's an Agent Johnson in it, for instance) but nothing more than passing comments.

Character-wise, McClaine was introduced as the divorced father. He was a bad ass and yet completely down to Earth about all that was exploding around him. His counter-part computer nerd young collegey kid with his future in front of him was scared and believable.

If you want to wait for the UNRATED dvd, go ahead. But please see this movie. I cannot stress how enjoyable this movie is. As a fan of 90s action movies and the Die Hard series. See this movie.

well damn, that's good news Marco. Figures that the violence is abundant still. Could have snuck a lot of it in with PG I bet! Ho ho!

I actually purchased the original films on DVD in May in anticipation of this one. My only real concern about this movie was that I didn't like most of the junk BW's involved himself in for like 10 years.

I had a good time in this movie. right from the start it's so damn over the top, you can't take any of the plot too seriously. I AM NEVER PUSHING ALT-CTRL-DEL AGAIN OH MY GOD!!! I suppose you're right, after all these dreary end-of-trilogies this year, it's a welcome relief.

Kevin Smith's character was kinda funny how spot on it was

i still love the original even though the premise of that movie more or less boils down to "eighty percent of the supporting cast makes very poor decisions! bruce willis compensates!" (seriously, go watch it), and the third one is structured as maybe the ultimate cable TV movie and enjoyed often enough as such. two is less memorable for me.

tha tsaid i don't really genuinely enjoy action movies anymore. you mentioned spider-man 3, and hell if i regret having ponied up my $10, but the fact remains that the whole time i was telling myself "this is silly but it's also fun!". for me to be able to just out and out enjoy myself... i guess i'd have to be really impressed?

I'll bring up Gears of War and the Xbox 360. Do you think Fox Interactive is trying to get on Microsoft's good side or did MS just pony up the cash? This movie's going to go on to make $100+ million, and that's at least one million people that will see it there, and subliminally want to play it on an Xbox Elite system, now available for only $479.99!

You don't see people playing video games in movies much. Unless they are college kids, hackers or stoners.

Shit. Shit! Hitman movie trailer. FUCK. Somehow I don't think it will be about changing chothes and accidental kills, but exploding shit and gun-fu posturing.

Yeah, saw that trailer. It looks fuckin' shit-awful. You know something's wrong when a two-minute preview is mostly text, and no dialogue.

All the Die Hards are about these death-defying stunts McClane pulls off. He could have a rabid wolverine crazy glued to his belt while trapped in a burning cement truck suspended by a junk yard crane over a field of quick sand and would still make it out in a reasonably okay state. Anyone in the movie only serves to promote how cool McClane is or sets up a funny line.

From a 90-minute movie they only show maybe 30 seconds of footage (and all in slow motion). The actor doesn't look grave and criminalistic enough for me. He also isn't bald so much as he has a shaved head.

Also, is it just me or is the Hitman dude actually the bad guy in LFoDH?

Edit: IMDB says yes he is.

I just saw it. It was like seeing XXX or SWAT or any other awesome action movie from the last 10 years. It was still good. Mostly it had awesome parts that made it OK enough to gloss over the not-so-good parts.

PS: I like the Jodi Foster movie preview for The Brave One. The last line in the trailer was, "I want my dog back."

The Riddick series is surprisingly solid. Maybe I prefer Pitch Black over The Chronicles of Riddick, and maybe I'm just a Peter Chung fanboy when it comes to Dark Fury, but it's got a lot going for it.

Just about the strangest part of xXx was the musical nod to The Third Man.

Die Hard was all about McClane screaming.

Not him screaming about anything in particular, but him screaming.

Like

"Aaaah!"

and

"Aaaaaaaaaahh!"

and like, when he jumped vents

"Aaaagghh!"

What the fuck? Those movies were fucking terrible and LFODH was really good approaching but not reaching great.

As far as Vin Diesel is concerned, Pitch Black is a pretty rollicking sf flick and Chronicles is just too baroque and simplistic for me. Had a bad taste in my mouth the whole time I watched it.

I can't think of a single action movie that came before XXX that was as intentionally manly. I mean, the main character is a professional stunt driver asshole. It may not have been executed properly, but the entire thing was ridiculousness on top of ridiculousness. Until XXX it seemed like Hollywood took its action movies seriously, and, well, that fucking sucked.

You must be from one of those parallel dimensions that never had an Austin Powers movie. You should rent it before returning.

Just saw the movie!

I was surprised that the "DIE HARD 4.0" title was intact. Normally, in Japan, they just put the Japan-only title in katakana beneath the English title. I expected it to say "LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD". Well.

It was pretty good. I mean, for what it's worth.

spoiler lol
the two "mcclane in an automobile, versus a helicopter" fights were pretty good!

an oddity.
It's a negative prefix attached to a word that already has a negative suffix.

Except Austin Powers is for girls and people who like Friends (who may have penises, but keep them locked away in a safebox guarded by more girls).

It's not so much that it's not a word.

It's more that I think you're expressing a concept with the not-word that sounds silly.

Silly.

Also skimming this thread just makes me depressed. :(

Justin Long was indeed the one of the best parts of the movie. This is the type of character that could easily ruin a flick like this. 10 years ago they would have cast some jack-ass like Rob Schneider (and they did). But Long was funny and likeable and gave the downbeats a lot more energy than they would have had otherwise. I think they interviewed him in Playboy or something where he said he saw his role as "please god don't let me fuck up Die Hard 4."

McClane Vs. a Jet was True Lies.

I did not like McClane v Jet.

BUT THE REST OF THE MOVIE WAS MUCH GOODER.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by Long, actually. Yeah, the jet was totally true lies, but it was still damn funny. I laughed a ton at this movie, so mission accomplished, I guess.

Being better than Rob Scheider isn't an accomplishment. Long and Smith as "computer geeks" played off of Willis's macho character was grating and excruciating to watch. The movie brought nothing to the table. I obviously don't have any of the nostalgia you guys do.
