I'm looking to pick up an upscaling DVD player at the moment - the 360 works nicely but it's a little loud for this purpose and I keep getting invites and messages and so forth while I'm watching movies, so....

Anything in particular I should look for? Will any old £50 box do the job? Are all DVD players multi-region these days?

I don't know if the 360 upscales. It didn't before, and everything looked like ass... did they just add the feature or something?

By the way, the PS3 is a great upscaling DVD player, surprisingly.

It does, but only via VGA.

I've heard good things about the Denon ones (DVD-2930 and DVD-3930). And, to a lesser extent, Oppo.

There's an option to turn notifications off while you're watching movies.

Booyaka. See if you can find a UK equivalent of that, I guess? Even without rebate, it's US$50, which is a fair bit less than UK£50.

Elites upscale over HDMI as well.

Hacked Xboxes with XMBC can upscale to 1080i, too.

Yeah, I've been looking for somewhere in the UK that still has component cables for the original xbox and shit, I can't find them even on ebay.

I think that's just buyer's remorse.

Yeah, it does a better job than the PS2 does, and it’s not as bad as some cheap DVD players via component, but if you have the money you’re better off getting a stand-alone player.

My suggestion is to go for something with the Faroudja chip in it. There are quite a few brands that sport this technology, and Samsung recently was selling one that did 1080p upscaling for $60 (about £30) with the chip, but that was on sale and the sale’s over. Also, really, I don’t feel that there’s much of a difference between 720p and 1080p upscaling. I mean, there is, but if it comes down to a pinch you’ll probably be fine just going with 720p and a better player than going with 1080p minus all the bells and whistles.

Toups did some research on this recently. Shoot him a PM to ask what brand he bought that had component cables and optical cables for a pretty good price.

Is this the one? It's a little pricey, but it'll get a ton of use so it's not too bad.

Hm. Looks like an upgrade model to me. Definitely more expensive.

This is tough since I've got no experience in price-hunting outside Teh U.S.A.

I think that's the model. I can't be certain as I don't have the flyer anymore and I don't remember the details off hand. Also, as a nice thing to point out: that DVD player will play DIVX (Mpeg-4) files... which you may find very awesomely useful.

FAKE EDIT: Cheaper here

hah! I actually have some monster component cables with the attached optical dongle which I wound up not using.

i'll be willing to sell them to you for cheep!

also yeah, a hacked xbox makes a mighty fine upscaling DVD player. it can be a bit of a pain to set up, though.
