Today I got a new phone. Upgraded from an LG VX5200 to an LG VX8600. I wanted to get an 8700 (those things are really, really shiny), but it cost a lot more. The 8600 is also really nice, though. A glossy, sleek, black design that features a nicely done fading in an out of the backlights. It's very responsive, very functional, and has a nicer selection of ringtones than my brother's Motorola RAZR.

So. What have you been talking into lately?

Sagem My-V65. A three year old soapbar with a fantastic TFT screen that has naver failed me. Provably upgrading this year to an Sagem My-411v, a thinner version of the same hardware with an Mp3 player built in.

A Sony Ericsson T630.

It's kind of hard to believe this is from 2004. Got my blueteeth and a week's worth of battery life, not to mention the least horrifying interface in the business. Ring tones are oldschool poly, but the synth is pretty nice so a MIDI of Terrible Beat from Shinobi doesn't suddenly have trumpets and shit like on my brother's phone.

I got this after my dad upgraded to a RAZR in 2006. The RAZR is dead already.

Sony Erricson W550i.. Its the phone with the silly swingy-outy keypad.

I basically bought the most rugged looking phone without an exposed keypad - I'm one of those people that foolishly put their phones into pockets filled with phone-hating objects. Keypads always die on me. ALWAYS.
For some reason I can't receive or send picture messages on it, which is a shame, cos the 1Mpixel camera on it is pretty decent. It even has a panoramic-stitcher function - something that my digital camera doesn't have!

I talk into regular phones. I don't own a cell phone, and never will, because I have no need for it, and hate them as well.

You have no need for a cell phone?

Do you not like to talk to people when not in your house?

What if you are dying in a ditch and have no means to call the emergency services, eh?

I have a K750i, it's compatible with iSync and has a reasonable camera so that's me covered.

Isn't it kinda GIRLISH to be able to call the emergency services to save your own life when you're lying in a ditch? I think it's only MANLY to not have a mobile phone with you.

I hear Benoit also hates refrigerated food and indoor plumbing.

PS: my phone is capable, but so lacking in basic features. Speakerphone, dammit! I just want to put the phone down and talk sometimes! It's old, but the tech is advanced enough now--or was advanced enough at the time--so that even the 'basic' model is pretty good.

The one thing is the battery, though. It always claims it's out of battery. Even when I charge it for like 9 years. I think it has dreams of becoming an ipod.

I have this sucker:

It's a Motorola C261. It was cheap 'n' cheerful; $90 (CAD) and has a decent camera. It's small, light, has great reception, is user-friendly and (importantly) has buttons that are comfortable to use. To me it feels like a disposable camera; quick, easy, perfectly functional. I've been very happy with the phone since I got it. It's also really slick-looking in person.

The button issue is important for obvious reasons. I find all Sony Ericsson phones to be lovely-looking with great features, but ultimately they fail as phones. My previous phone was great because it could record sound, but the buttons were tiny and a real pain to use.

I like this thread. More conversation about what you look for in a phone and your experiences with different kinds, please!

Kap, that's quite a bitching-looking phone. I hate how most companies only sell phones in black or silver.

I want to be able to play Ridge Racer on my phone like Rud13 can.

Other people can call the emergency service for me in a house near to me. It's how people did it before there was a cell phone.

Because I don't have a reason to own one. If I don't need it, why own it? It'll always be off, since I don't care and don't want to be always available. Why should I lug something with me that I don't need? People should accept that there's distance separating people.

Cell phones suck. I've never owned one, and whenever I use someone else's it's just a bunch of tiny sounds and shitty reception. For how many commercials these fucking companies pop out, you'd think they'd figure out how to make a phone that actually works. I guess they're too busy making them RADICAL and then explaining how many minutes you can use during lint or whatever.

I 95% agree with this. Though I do keep a clunky and cheap prepaid cell around for travel purposes.

Some day I will probably get some form of wireless internet doohicky. Whether it's for a laptop, or a PDA phone, or the iPwn. Depends on what I'm doing, what I'm earning.

Mine's two years old, default Free phone from Sprint back at the time. It has no functionality compared to the newest stuff, but honestly I kind of like it that way. If I get something better, then I'll have to keep up with the Joneses. With this I've gotten into a groove of comfort and familiarity that I don't want to leave.

But I'll have to soon because this one is falling apart on me.

Benoit's arguments remind me of a friend who used to own a cell but never answered. he kept saying to stop calling him or IM'ing him and send him email.

I sent him an email.

Got a reply two weeks later.

Wanted to kick the shit out of him.

a bit less Näppäinluko though, and it has nice background-colors!

If it wasn't for the antenna, you wouldn't believe it's a 2001-phone if you didn't take a closer look. It's like a fine crafted piece of an ancient age of mobile phones back when colors were COOL.

I still like mine and will keep that one around till I can afford one of the small Samsung-phones. Or a Panasonic one, once again...

See this whole idea is all nice and well when you don't actually need to talk to people all the time, but some people do. Do you have a job? Can you even have a real job without a cellphone these days? (Note: journalist does not count.)

Anyways, this one week a few weeks ago I lost my cellphone and man it was rough.

Because I was at this big party and there weren't any house phones around, and I needed to meet my friend at the door to let him in, and there was a guard at the door who couldn't leave the door, so I just had to keep rechecking the door because he couldn't call me. >:|

Well if everyone has cell phones, you could like borrow one and call?

Has the cell phone ruined your phone number memorization skills?

I remember the days when people were proud of how thick their "little black books" were.

I do not have htis guy's phone number memorized, correct.

And I was not calling him, he was supposed to call me.

Now, I was cycling through many different areas of the party, so I suppose every time I entered an area I could have borrowed someone's cell phone, taken that phone number, called him, given him the phone number and told him to call that number... if I had has number memorized!

Of course, at that point, it would have been easier to just call every once in a while and say, "ARE YOU THERE YET?", which would only be slightly easier than physically checking outside.

Really, the only logical solution is to just have my own phone on me.

I don't know, it just seems to me that I regularly run into situatiosn where I'm doing something and waiting for someone and the solution is just, "call me when you get there!", or, "call me if you get lost!", or "call me if you need any more info!", etc., etc.

Not sure how people manage without this ability.

Yes, it's amazing that we, as a people, survived the 80's.

You can maybe trust these people without doting on them? Go have fun without them. I like doing that. It's their loss if they flake out on a good time. Give them shit later about how they missed the bus full of dwarves that pulled up and then they can bother to show up for next event.

I'm one of those who texts (?) people since I loathe having to talk to people over the phone. Three years of telemarketing is to blame for that. Any phone I use must come with a qwerty keyboard and email. The email is mainly for business needs.

Talking is to be done in person, something about blabbing over the phone never has sat well with me.

Posting from a Blackberry. It's nice out today!

Can't a cellphone be a device of convenience, like a wristwatch, instead of a device that people have to argue around for it's usefulness?

I mean, if I can carry around the time, that's pretty good. It doesn't mean I have to be on time for everything, however.

Well, I'm glad you have a lot of experience to back up your judgement.

The cell phone has become an accessory like a nice watch, a stylish pair of glasses, or 15 lbs of platinum chains. It just happens to be a rather handy and useful accessory.

I have a fairly outdated phone with no camera and WHATNOT. I haven't activated text-messaging because, I don't think it would be a benefit. I'd imagine I would use it to send meaningless drivel to my friends and then hit on people when I'm drunk (bad idea, anyways).

Text messages are a godsend to me now. Whenever I have something really, really brief to say, I can send a text. Otherwise I'm going to make a call and it is going to be fivce minutes long rather than thirty seconds because some people I know will start with the chitchat at any time of the day if you give them a chance. A text eliminates that problem.

Also good for messages while in a movie theatre.

Please shut down your cell phone during a movie, or at least don't work with it. Even the backlight is a pain in the ass to the viewers behind.

I have a Treo 700p

It has a nice internet connection and it gets my emails! Woohoo! It honestly didn't cost that much more than getting a new phone I wouldn't have been as happy with. I mean, I use it as a PDA/Emailreader/Webrowser/Pornwatcher more than I use it to talk with people, so it serves its main purpose perfectly (and gets between 100k and 300k download speeds).
