this is what a DS looks like after it's been in a mid-size SUV that's flipped over four times (after being blindsided by a rather large ambulance).
so, yea, i almost died last Tuesday. i happened to be playing Etrian Odyssey at the time the ambulance went out of control and crossed three lanes of traffic to collide with our car (at 60mph). it was a pretty horrific experience, and climbing out the broken window of an upside down SUV is unnerving to say the least. i, and everyone else, somehow emerged from the wreckage with very few injuries (considering the type of accident).
and so did the DS, apparently. i got this back today, and it actually still works in spite of it's new paint job.
i'm not really trying to make light of the situation in the least. i just thought this was sort of an interesting fact in regard to what happened. guess the thing is tougher than it looks. |

is etrian odyssey the devo live: the mongoloid years of DS games?
I say this because Devo live causes car accidents. no joke. |

The version of "Jocko Homo" on that album is probably the greatest thing ever.

Toups, if you'd like to frontpage it, you have my permission. i was debating on whether or not to even create the topic at first, but the whole thing is just so bizarre that i feel compelled to tell the story. |

Our van rolled off of the interstate on a sharp turn two Saturdays ago. The moment of the actual wreck wasn't that scary to me, but after it was all done, the fact that one of my best friends could have been killed scared so many shits out of me it was unreal.
Weirdest part was that the worst injury was a bruised tail bone, and none of our equipment was damaged at all. _________________

The whole devo live album is amazing, elvis.shrugged.
It is odd that you bring up the sound. The reason I thought of Devo LIve The Monogloid Years when you brought this up is that a friend of mine was in a pretty awful accident while listening to that album. He and the other guy in the car were fine, but the car basically slipped on a 4 lane (on each side) highway, and flew from the outer lane all the way to the middle and bounced off of the wall a bunch of times IIRC. It didn't roll, but the odd part of it was that my friend only really said he remembered the sound of it, which was the version of Mongoloid on this album, and that it only skipped once.
I wonder if the sound thing is common. |

well, it's kind of hard to describe. i definitely remember all of it; the sound, the vision, the sensation. but the sound is the most distinct thing. it's the absolute worst scraping noise in the world; screeching, twisting metal against pavement, coupled with shattering glass and the screams/exclamations of other people in the car.
that was sort of a morbid post, but i don't really have a way to lighten that description up. it's just a very strange combination of sensory overload. |

I'm normaly anti S.U.V., but it sounds like it saved some lives. Good to here you're okay mate.
Do you know why the ambulance did what it did? it doesn't sound like it had it's sirens on nd was heading anywhere. _________________ MYSTERY ADVENTURE START.. |

i wasn't sure what i was going to do with the DS. i was originally thinking of putting it somewhere, as is, and just getting a new one eventually. but dhex mentioned it will probably start to smell, so i think i'm just going to clean it off and use it again. i mean, it seems to be working fine.
we aren't exactly sure why the ambulance did what it did. its lights weren't on so i assume it wasn't on its way anywhere in particular. the most logical explanation is that it was merging onto the parkway we were on, but took the turn too quickly and the driver lost control. the driver said he couldn't control it, so that's really the only thing i can go by.
after the ambulance hit us, it kept going and then it flipped over on the shoulder. but everyone involved (in the car i was in and in the ambulance) came out alive. |

god damn. to add to my already unsettling phobia of cars and fear of having a car accident, i read this.
i mean, it's a pretty startling, and interesting, story, but fuck. whenever my friends drive shittily they're like, "HEY man it's fine" but i'm like, somebody has to make a mistake sometime, and that's how fucking accidents happen. i can't tell you how terrified i am of something like this happen to me.
maybe they should start making armor out of ds casing :/// _________________ metafilter vs. youtube comments |

You didn't wipe off that DS yet, right? Cuz much like a t-shirt with blood on it, it's punk magic rating is about 60%.
Also, proof that a big car isn't safer, law of the jungle. If someone bigger exists, it is going to try to motherfucking kill you for fun. The only true automotive safety requires 400 pounds of obesity, and a helmet. |

Man, I had no idea! You sounded good last night anyways. Good to know that you’re doing so well.
But, uhh, yeah. I got in a pretty bad car accident a while back (I don't remember any more but I think it was '99) and I had my NGPC in my inside breast pocket of my jacket. It got smashed between me and steering wheel. I didn't even think of it for days, and my jacket was kind of ruined so I just threw it in a closet when I got back from the hospital. I went to go see if there was anything I needed in my car a few days later, and when I got there I found the game that was in the NGPC, Neo Turf Masters, in the wreckage. I have no idea how it came out of the system, and seeing it I remembered that I hadn’t checked for my NGPC yet. I took the game with me (and left everything else) and found the NGPC when I got home in the pocket. There was a mighty scuff on the screen but it was in perfect working order… except the game was broken (winter, missing door, three days of rain and snow…).
Anyways, that was scary shit, I can’t even imagine getting blindsided by shit like that. It’s interesting to see how we track our time though. I remember things around the games I was playing at the time more easily than years. Again, I’m glad to hear you’re safe. _________________

thanks to everyone, again.
the DS has not been wiped off yet, and...maybe i'll just leave it as is. if it stains permanently, that's ok; if it flakes off, that's ok; if it starts smelling...well, i'll clean it. i suppose it sort of guarantees most people won't want to play with it, though.
i don't think i'd sell it on eBay. i feel like this DS has earned its place alongside me.
in terms of car-related things:
i've been in a car since the accident, and i've driven myself pretty much as i normally would. i find myself questioning other drivers a bit more and keeping more space between myself and other cars, though.
i guess really, most people don't take driving very seriously. and even if you do, you don't. but it's not something i can think about too deeply, or let me stop living and doing what i need to do. |

Dude, you shouldn't put up with crappy driving. Seriously. It's not alright.

This story is actually remarkably similar to something that happened to a friend about a month ago. He was sideswiped hard on the passenger side by an out-of-control car while both were driving probably ~100 km/h (60mph) on an expressway, which flipped his car two and a half times, rolling into the median, which, thankfully, was both grassy and wide. The car that hit him probably also lost control merging onto traffic. My friend actually saw that it was swerving out of control and tried to slow down/speed up to avoid it but the other car was too unpredictable and still nailed him.
He walked away with essentially no injuries. His car -- a Scion xB -- held its shape quite well but was a write-off. The other driver was alright as well.
The connection to the DS hook of your story is this: Inside his Scion xB, he kept a Transformers version of the same model Scion xB, sitting loosely in an open, almost perfectly sized vertical slot by the central armrest. I always thought that was pretty cool.
Surprisingly, the Transformer, which would have been tossed out and around in the flips, survived with little damage as well. He says a couple small parts popped off, but he gathered them at the scene and they popped right back on. The only real damage was a couple small cosmetic blemishes.
He's planning on getting another Scion xB.
So, uh, here's to both people and toys surviving rollovers! And let this be a warning to never take onramps or offramps too fast.
EDIT: PS: I'm not a spambot and neither Toyato nor Hasbro paid me to post this _________________ Wii: 8631 7977 8603 8071 |
