Probably I am going to buy a macbook pro soon and I do not understand the consequences of this choice. Insight?

Glossy is what you see on most laptops in stores; it offers "better color," they claim, but it also makes the screen really really prone to glare. Matte is the more traditional LCD screen finish (think LCD monitors you've seen).

Out of idle curiosity, are glossy screens easier to clean?
I'm pretty terrified of cleaning my screen, it's delicate like a newborn kitten but sort of tacky at the same time so shit really gets stuck on there.

Glossy screens, especially bad ones, are dust and fingerprint magnets.
They are as tough as regular screens, since the final coating is of minor importance to it's integrity.

Glossy screens are supposed to be better at crunching blacks...which is important, but I prefer matte screens on laptops.

Yeah, glossy provides deeper blacks. Took me a while to get used to it on my notebook, but I think I'd take it over matte if given the choice again.

dark steve, it doesn't matter one whit of a fuck. Go to a store, any store, compare glossy and matte screens, and choose the one that pleases you the most. People will tell you that THIS SCREEN HAS A HIGHER AGILITY STAT BY FOUR or THIS ONE CAN SAVING THROW SIX PERCENT OF THE TIME but seriously, that's retarded. Pick the type that seems nicest to you.

Crunching blacks, if it's anything like crushing blacks, is bad ;_;

Glossy has better colors, but for the portable lifestyle, I'd say matte is the move to make. If you're getting a home monitor and have the option though, I'd go glossy.

I've always questioned the "better colors" claim though, because if that were the case, then why are the super high end screens for professional video editing and graphic design/layout always matte finished, and never glossy? At least I've never personally seen or heard of a glossy-finished one. You would think that would be the first place you'd see glossy taking over the market, but it's backwards.

They're probably more vibrant, saturated colors, but maybe not quite as accurate?

My new laptop has what I think is a glossy screen (it's highly reflective, like glass. That's glossy, correct?) and I must say that I prefer it vastly to my previous laptop's matte screen. It might just be my imagination, but it seems much crisper and cleaner.

It might just be a newer more expensive screen on your new laptop. I second the go into a store and compare them yourself idea.

when you look at a matte screen that's switched off, you don't see a reflection, just the inky blackness of oblivion.
