It's, hm. Interesting. Like, I don't mean this to insult musical tastes, but it seems like a lot of the songs are gimmick choices. A lot, but definitely not all! Hopping through Zombie Nation, Ęsop Rock, John Fahey, Boris... Yeah, there's definitely good stuff for me here.
I'm hesitating to upload stuff because we're still in that "woah shit too many woah woah slow down" phase. _________________

I've been sending a lot through today, because I sort of forgot about this. A Residents track is on its way. |

i will say that i prefer 'real' submissions to 'HAY GUYZ' ones anyway. as for me personally, i've been deliberately selecting songs i thought were good for whatever reason. i hope it mellows out and becomes that yah?
also i have a backlog of a lot of this stuff since...yeah it's kind of a deluge. maybe there should be rules as to how many you're allowed to submit a ___? _________________ metafilter vs. youtube comments |

Well I think it's a bit much to say no metal or something, some people like it!
Sambo Master and The Pillows makes me want to knee myself in the face, it's easy enough to just not open it though.
I just feel like no one's actually interested in what I'm sending, and only rabite's things have interested me so far. I don't want to be wasting my time. That Albanian thing took my fucking ages. _________________ MYSTERY ADVENTURE START.. |

I still love that tabla track that you sent, daphny.
It seems like we're collectively figuring out how to 'do it right'. Maybe songs that are GOOD to us will just seem interesting to other people, while songs that are only interesting to us will seem gimmicky to other people? Like, just assume that whatever you send is gonna be kicked down one notch automatically.
Oh, Bluuuuuebelly: I do like the Albanian tracks, but (omg) they are so low-fi that I have a hard time listening to them. Much like that fucking awesome Syrian song that Rabite sent. It might just be my personal rig, but the tinny treble and compressed loudness hurt like a clusterfucking bastard. I still appreciate the inclusion of worldly and expressive stuff, though, so I'm kinda torn about quality of captured music vs. quality of reproduced music. _________________

I didn't see that. I wrote the post a while before I sent it.
Yes!
I feel rejuvenated and may post some Mafiosi music tomorrow. :D
Psiga: I don't think I could listen to them if they were recorded with nice equipment. I find it hard to tolerate anything recorded within the last 20 years, even if it's analogue. It's like things don't enter my ears unless there's some static in there. It's pretty dumb really. The more accurate you capture the sound the less real it feels to me. _________________ MYSTERY ADVENTURE START.. |

Interesting. Reminds me of something: I found this web page that took really old wax cylinder recordings and tried to 'fix' them digitally. Get rid of the noise and shit. They had samples of a bunch of different techniques, some of them working in three dimensions (who knows how).
All of them sounded like garbage compared to the originals. The digital correction just ripped all of the expression out of the performance. Sure, sure, the clicks went away, and the hissing wasn't as noticeable, but the actual music didn't sound 'real' anymore. _________________

I find it pretty hard to listen to music unless it feels like it's scrathing me ears nowadays. When I hear really high natural sounds, like a lot of traditional Asian voices, and some of that Albanian stuff I almost get dizzy. In a really good way, I mean: an out-of-body type thing. Yeah it's those high notes, and some harmonies that really... I don't know how to say it... they are just the most amazing thing to me. The most powerful thing. Almost makes me want to get religious. Fuck, I'd fake being a Catholic if they still sung the masses.
If anyone has any Gamelan music I'd really love to hear it, I forgot all my Indonesian CDs.
Someone said "I judge a culture by it's music". When I arrived here I heard nothing but bad talk about Albania: said they were heroin dealers, didn't work, lazy, were ruining the country. Then I heard that CD and decided to fucking hate Italy. Not a fucking clue. _________________ MYSTERY ADVENTURE START.. |

I actually studied Gamelan briefly and very informally with Barbara Benary, before I knew how entirely cool she is (she's kind of the biggest force for Gamelan in the USA, a member of Gamelan Son of Lion, etc.). I think I've got a couple discs of hers floating around, but I'm gone for the next week, and even then I'm not sure where they are.
Good news is when I get back my new laptop should be here, and it should have sound! So I don't have to transfer all these tracks to mp3 players to listen to them, and I can actually play the m4as and what have you. That should make my life significantly better.
Blueberry, I've got a couple Malian records from the Yaala Yaala imprint you might really like; I'll try to get them up when I'm back too. They aren't on OiNK cause they're totally lo-fi and cassette sourced (being from rural Africa and such), and OiNK is so artistically/societally bankrupt that they've disallowed most of the third world's music, and I'd rather not get banned for upping. _________________

I have lots of fun music that I'd love to share though, honest.. |

Hrm. I was going to send a couple of tracks off of The Inalienable Dreamless, but it doesn't seem like too many people on the list like that sort of thing. I was also going to do a pre-Post (lol?) Rock retrospective on Isis, but... same boat.
Guess I'll just keep listening for now. |

This thread was never meant for music discussion precisely because of things like this. Send it, and if people like it they'll respond (replying to all doesn't spam, thanks to Gmail's threading system which can be used almost exactly like a traditional forum!). Worst case scenario is everyone deletes your songs without listening, but that's unlikely. Even if you don't get positive feedback you've given people new options and helped them develop, expand and define their tastes! |

| I looked into this a couple of days ago, but there's nothing we can do about it. Gmail's filters and labels won't let you at your mail before Google applies its spam filtering, so you can't specify to allow things with certain subjects. Just gonna have to NOT SPAM things. You should only have to do this a maximum of once per person on the list, though (once allowed, always whitelisted, I hope). |

The funny thing is when it marks my own posts as spam. Twice.
Also, when browsing my spam folder, google's little ad devices helpfully offer spam recipes. Spam pastries, spam quiche, spicy spam kebabs!

Hey people I just sent some stuff because no one else is. I actually kind of want to hear some famous stuff I just haven't ever looked into. Tool, NIN, The Who, Rolling Stones, etc. I just have no clue where to start with ultra famous bands or bands with like 20 freaking albums. So please send music, whether it is famous or not.
Maybe we can send our favorite Beatles songs?
How come no one sent any Battles?
Seriously people, I know you aren't buying/finding/stealing music, so share it with us! A large majority of the CDs I have bought in the past 3 years have been because of numberic.
Someone write a big thing about Boris! or the Boredoms.
Or good obscure video game soundtracks! _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games
