Maybe this is a tad harsh but BDSM seems to have all the psychological appeal of being an indulged six year old? Perhaps the sub, too - all this public homework stuff seems to reek of pratish attention-seeking piggybacked onto women's and sexual lib?

Yeah, if anything, I would say that the BDSM scene is better in that regard because the power dynamics are overt. In 'normal' sexual relationships, there's almost always power dynamics, only they're often not talked about, which leads to frequent situations of uh, abuse and coercion, only there aren't any safewords.

This is not to say that coercive/abusive relationships don't happen in the context of BDSM, of course, just that the explicit nature of them generally allows for less dickery, not more.

Speaking of sexy (and the broader topic at hand), BSDM-type things seem much hotter to me if they're not explicitly established between the participants ("we are doing BDSM now, person A is the dom, person B is the sub"). Though I agree that they have more potential for bad outcomes that way. In general, aren't facets of human relationships less exciting (in all senses of the word) when they're formalized and explicitly stated?

in addition, i like to think that a community watches out for its own. many of the people in my local scene have experience with education and abuse prevention and know when something sends up a red flag. education is a big priority of any organized community, and that includes the difference between s/m and abuse.
