So I've got an interview I need to transcribe in wma format, but there's so much background noise that I can barely make out the talking. I'd like to run some kind of basic noise reduction filter on it to make it more listenable, but I can't open it in any of my audio editors. I've got audacity, which doesn't even recognize it, and goldwave, which tries to open it but gives up halfway through.

Any tips?

Convert the wma into a wav first... there are many programs that can do this if you look around on the internet, or you can just run the output from your computer into some kind of recording device.

what kind of background noise is it? if it's constant (like an air conditioner) you can try a few different different settings with a noise gate.

it's mostly ambient hum and then loads of background chatter. I figure with some simple noise reduction and EQing I can make it so its workable.

when you export the edited version, use ogg so BenRen will listen.

If you're looking for free software, Audacity is a good enough editor and MPlayer and VLC can export the wma to wav.

Goldwave will do a decent hiss removal.

It keeps giving me fucking out of memory errors.

I've got plenty of HD space! Maybe my RAM's being hogged by something?

MP3 is an ISO standard, so it's okay, too. I don't even have an OGG library installed.

By tons of useless services, probably.

If a service is truly useless, can it be considered a service anymore?

Toups, how old is your machine? Sound editing can be about as taxing as graphics work. Not that long ago, I had a computer that could just barely handle Cool Edit Pro operations, for example. So an out-of-memory error is probably the real deal; free up what you can, but maybe you just can't handle it. =(

Lame.

It should support wma encoding.

It depends on the context. What I mean is that for the average user, Windows XP comes with a lot of services enabled by default that he/she doesn't need. At all. There was a good page on this, but it's late, so I'll dig it up tomorrow.

This would be kind of helpful. I'd be awfully grateful if you did dig it up.

I've done a lot of basic audio work on this thing before. Slightly older-than-a-year laptop. I think I've got the problem fixed now, though.

WinAmp should be able to save it as a wav (go to preferences>plugins>output and select the Disk Writer plugin), as should WinLAME and iTunes. You probably have at least one of these installed already! Audacity simpy doesn't open WMA files.
