When creating a world, is there a way to have one music file play on first entry of a screen, then a different music file on re-entry? _________________

I've spent a total of 2 minutes in the level editor so there might be a more elegant solution, but the only method I can think of is cloning the screen and using warps creatively. |

Yeah warping is going to be your best option there. _________________

I don't think I'm ready to deal with warping just yet -- I've got nowhere near the attention to technical/atmospheric detail that dessgeega and vision have, but I'm slowly figuring out the nuances of the editor.
An example of a loop from my work-in-progress:

Looks pretty sweet, dude. Its nice and minimal, even before decoration.
It'll be a good atmospheric one if you pick the right tilesets :)
What was your idea for changing music? Does it serve a specific purpose? _________________

Thanks for the comments!
Before the stretch shown in the YouTube clip, there's a part where the player goes through a few screens, picks up some powers, then returns the way s/he came. I wanted to have different music for the return, but it'll have to wait until I'm finished with the entire skeleton. _________________

The skeleton's done, and I had a blast putting it together. Now I need to really figure out the aesthetic I want to go for.

By chance has anyone else had AStrangeDream.exe not work? I have been trying to install it for days, have downloaded it multiple times, but it just won't open. _________________

Have you been trying to install it THROUGH the Knytt Stories program? _________________

ah. i like to freefall in the game, yeah. the mechanics are just so smooth and free that i don't like playing knytt games deliberately, unless the game gives me a swift kick in the balls right off the bat to put me out of that mentality.
it just feels so good to move in that game that i try to do it as much as i can :) |

psiga, all the installer does is unpack the game files, so if were to simply put those game files in your "worlds" folder, they should appear on your menu. you should play them because they are elegantly and beautifully constructed.
i was disappointed to find out that locked doors and enemies don't interact the way i thought they would. _________________

I really like the main and level pack installers. They feel unique and clean and fresh.
More games and other programs should come with nice custom installers like this. Make it a joy to use my computer! |

Were you hoping that unlocking the door would unleash enemies that would otherwise be trapped, only to find that they can just walk straight through them? _________________

I'm rebuilding parts of my level in the interest of better gameplay, and I stumbled across a fun fact: if you attempt to delete a nonexistent screen, the Level Editor crashes. _________________

You should suggest that at Nifflas' forums; maybe they can implement it in a later version?
I find the pre-made stories, like the Knytt, to be intensely relaxing and often very clever. I can't wait until I have enough spare time to start making my own. _________________

I was really stuck on the two or three screens after the second save-point. Sometimes I'd try to use the radar to navigate, sometimes I'd look for some sort of pattern to the visible game elements. I felt like most of the progress I made was not through consciously understanding the level and more like random luck. _________________ JSNLV is frequently and intentionally wrong. |

The presentation is impeccable; the flow is largely intuitive. The logic is tight and self-contained: red eyes = bad, climbing = good. I'm always a little confused to discover that I can climb without getting the power-up first, because it's not obvious until you actually try to climb, whereas with the run power-up, I know from the very first second of gameplay that I'm running.
Other than that, I had zero hiccups with going through the level, and it really nails its sense of atmosphere. _________________

Unrelated: I noticed in vision's YouTube clips that he does a lot of normal climbing, i.e. holding up or down or whatever. For some reason, whenever I attach to a wall, I start mashing jump. _________________

yeah, i burned right through that, but it's definitely got some pretty sound design (i found myself wishing there were more save points, even though i only died once - don't add more save points).
good show, dess!
(yeah i had no idea you could just go straight up a wall either until i had my friend try to play and that was his very first instinct) |

Thank youuuu. I did even try unpacking the thing through 7zip, but even though 7zip said that it could open the thing, it then spat an error message at me. Curious indeed.
Alrighty. I'ma download that, and play it after I play with your new work. _________________

At first I didn't like it much, but then it started getting a bit devious, and I couldn't help but smile. Honestly still prefer the first, but this has flair. And major kudos for completing whole and cohesive levels, rather than just having a few cool screens that don't tie together so much. _________________

Get into the habit of hitting Q when you start a level to see what powers you have, and you won't be surprised anymore! _________________

too much trial and error for my tastes, and it's often hard to tell if a line of blocks out in space is a platform or the ceiling. |

his forums intimidate me. his "third-party levels" forum is divided into difficulty levels, and i havn't really been compelled to label my stories as any of those. _________________

It seems likely that the thread introducing the level and providing a place for commentary would simply be moved to a different difficulty area if a number of players felt that your assessment was inaccurate. Just try to give a quick, intuited estimate of how hard it is and toss it out there. It would be a shame not to share the work you've done with that larger audience.
Will Nifflas be adding levels like yours to his main Knytt Stories page? |

I finally went back and finished Sky Flower. I really enjoy its usage of the single-screen wrapping mechanic, and the fact that every single screen is a challenge. _________________

I have an old Mac, the kind that you can't just install XP on, and although I'd hoped that Knytt Stories, being a simple not-resource-intensive game, would work rather nicely in a PC emulator. I was wrong.
For a start, KS requires at least Windows 2000 rather than the svelte Win98 (I never thought I'd say that about 98... sheesh). Once I installed a copy of Windows 2000, did the service-pack dance and messed around with crazy DLLs as mentioned earlier in the thread, Knytt Stories installed and ran.... but rather sluggishly in any room with animation in it (like the rain in the tutorial area, or waterfalls), and an infuriating 15-second delay every time you move from one screen to the next... kind of kill the chill-out vibe that Knytt tries to set up.
Of course, that was in the better of the two PC emulators I had to hand. In the lesser PC emulator, I got bored of holding down the arrow keys, waiting for my avatar to move even a single pixel...
So, yes, very much natural-Windows-PC-only. _________________ 私はガラスを食べられます。それは私を傷つけません。 |

| if the purpose of that level (cleared in about fifteen minutes just now) is to demonstrate the kind of gameplay concepts which i would ordinarily label unforgivable bullshit but love dearly when they happen to occur in knytt, then it's a smashing success. |
