Psst... Crackdown plays like shit (it did at E3). Your character walks at a snail's pace, jumps incredibly high, propelling himself forward at slightly faster than a snail's pace, and aims with ultra annoying precision that was crafted for anything but a dual analog control scheme. If you want to play this game get Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for the Xbox and play it on your 360. It's sort of similar, only without the guns, and plays much, much better.

Details. That's not what's interesting to me. Not to mention that E3 impressions rarely account for much at all. What's interesting is the way you can tackle on criminal organisations, taking down specific key branches to riddle down their resources if you so wish before taking the fight to their head honchoes' doorsteps. That and the grotesquely over-the-top supercop aspect. I enjoyed Ultimate Destruction, up there with the The Punisher shooter game as far as comic book video games go, but I want to see what David Jones has in store. |
E3 Impressions rarely account for much at all in RPG games and games that rely on stories, but they can be good for twitch games and just generally seeing if an engine is any good. I played Crackdown for maybe 10 minutes because there wasn't anyone else that seemed interested in playing it, and I wasn't impressed. I tried really hard to like it and it seemed to have some neat ideas, but it just bothered me that walking somewhere was a less efficient way of getting to a place than just jumping 300 feet in the air and landing there. The reason I quit playing it was that Matt walked up to me and said, "wow, this looks bad, let's go check out something else," and I agreed with him.
BUT.
The videos on gametrailers don't really seem to reflect what I played. The people are certainly moving much faster, but it could also be sped up game footage. Regardless, nobody has to go into crackdown buying it blindly since a demo is due out some time this month. We'll see if they fixed the stuff I didn't like about it.
Also, we'll all buy it anyways because it comes with a spot in the Halo 3 beta.

Hmm, what? |
You said you've played Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, right? Take that game and make it so that the Hulk can't dash and moves at half the normal speed when walking, but is still somehow able to leap to enormous heights. That's what Crackdown played like.

It's fixed. Based on the demo on Xbox Live the game plays phenomenally. They give you a substantial part of the game and limit it by an hour or so. My hour timed out and I'm almost tempted to start it all over again.
I already had it pre-ordered for the Halo 3 demo, but now I'm almost more excited for the game itself. Woo hoo!
