Ah, Meguriai Sora. For some reason it got universally panned by Western reviewers despite being actually quite good and offering an insane amount of gaming content. Interestingly it was also in development for close to four years. When the first Gundam game on the PS2 was released, which was very much the Target in Sight of its day (though I'd argue that Target in Sight is much much worse), there was a trailer for Meguriai Sora once you completed the game.
One of the reasons it took ages was because they had massive problems getting space based combat working properly (the previous entry had been resolutely ground based, which conveniently covered the first two movies). It's why there are two main veins of gameplay; the on rails Panzer Dragoon-esque shooting sections and the spherical shmup approach similar to that of Omega Boost.
The amount of content in the game is a little crazy though. Apart from the main campaign, which covers the TV series and Movies, you also have an ace pilot mini-campaign (featuring mecha as far as 0083 and also events that pre-date the One Year War, such as the Battle of Ruum where you have a few Zakus taking on a massive Federation fleet), then a whole new sidestory made especially for the game, followed by a user created campaign where you start as a grunt and work your way up and the game's also bloody online!
The game also features entirely re-animated footage too, which many thought was a portent of things to come in terms of re-animating all three of the original movies (instead we got the patchy Zeta Gundam movies, damn their eyes!).
I managed to nab the Japanese box set of this, or more accurately my wife did on my behalf (I actually got an e-mail from here off her mobile as she queued saying "I'm feeling very hardcore"). The boxset came with a lovely DVD of all the new animation, a limited edition MSIA toy and a reworking of the previous Gundam game with wingman control (similar to Lost War Chronicles).
Oh, as for Char and Amuro dying at the end of Char's Counterattack....
Look carefully, you'll see a solitary booster plume pull away from Axis (something that was made far more obvious in the PSone game). Bit cheeky in terms of creating a narrative loophole but bringing them back as cheeky old geezers (something that happened to the ZZ Gundam pilot Judau Ashita in a V Gundam sidestory manga) would be really lovely. _________________

So wait, I just learned that Gundam Musou is in fact NOT a crossover between Sengoku Musou and Gundam, but rather a Gundam game with the gameplay of Sengoku Musou!
...I'm kind of disappointed now. |
Pretty much, it's just Sengoku Musou using Gundam models rather than people (though the space combat sounds interesting). Still, the game boast 1000 opponents at any one time.
That's a little crazy really. _________________

Project: Sylpheed might be bullet hell in 3D, but just looking at the vid doesn't reveal too much about whether it really is. Someone MUST have played it ... step forward and tell us, unidentified observers. |
Project Sylpheed is very good but Itano Circus funs can only be truly had in the Macross PS2 game:

First, to clear something up, the American version of Encounters in Space doesn't have the online play. As a booby prize, most of the online-only content (basically, two G Gundam mecha and two Endless Waltz mecha) are available for use in Versus mode at the very beginning (with insane point costs to balance out their requisite Plot Armor). If you ever wanted to see who would win in a fight, the Tallgeese-3 or the Neue Ziel, then I guess this is very, very good news.
:-( |
Not having online is a real pisser. The Bandai chaps got in real trouble for including the non-UC mobile suits in the game (which is why they became online unlocks). Meguriai Sora is sacred to many Japanese Gundam fans and sullying that with Shiningu Fingaaaaaaaa is a big no-no.
Personally, I wasn't that put out mainly because beating the crap out of the feathered Wing Zero Custom in the RX-78-2 is a lot of fun.
If you like your Nieue Ziel though, you should definitely bag this:

As for Anubis...
Both ZOE games on the PlayStation 2 are horribly horribly broken. They failed to simplify thrust vectoring from Virtual On and created a half-assed "fix" by the name of Zero Shift to sort the disparity between mid and close range combat. The final boss fight with Anubis was just plain silly as a consequence (not as in hard, just laughable).
Meguriai Sora is slower but more deliberate. In short, you need a lot more skill to stay alive rather than button mashing for teh fucking win!
ACE2 is a lot faster than Anubis though but it's not really noticeable until you start upgrading the various mecha. Close combat is unbelievably fast in places however. _________________

Simon Belmont, please play Zone of the Enders 2. It's very fast, pretty, and flashy, it lacks much substance, but it's one hell of a fun action game.
There's nothing quite like spinning upside down in the middle of a desert, locked into sword combat with a Macross-transformed Vic Viper, only to grab him and drive him into a wall. |

That isn't gameplay, it's an epilepsy generator. _________________

| I dunno dude, it looks like gameplay to me!! |
Spamming an insta-teleport design hack doesn't constitute gameplay (on the special edition version Anubis actually recharges his health, so the tedium is actually prolonged). The worst moment in Anubis isn't that final boss battle though, it's actually the battle prior to that in Compression Space.
It's especially bad due to the fact that all the really cool sub-weapons you've earned throughout the game are REMOVED and you have next to no defense against most of Anubis' attacks. They toned it down slightly in the special edition but for the Japanese original...dear GOD
That video is on Very Hard difficulty by the way (I even completed the special edition on Extreme just to see how bad the game could be, Konami didn't disappoint).
I love the design work though and graphically it is a tour de force but the gameplay is horribly broken almost throughout (though I have a soft spot for the fleet battle).

| Ollie, dude, it's still fun. I'm not playing ZOE2 for the competition. I'm playing it for flashing lights, horrible voice acting, and shit blowing up. It's got all 3 of those in spades. |
The English script and voice acting is bizarrely awful isn't it? I actually quite liked the narrative and the Japanese version at least had competent voice actors. My main beef is that, well, there's not much game to be had in either ZOE game, even less in the sequel.
You literally can button mash your way through the whole thing and that's just a rip off in gaming terms. _________________
