A few days ago Tim started a thread about No More Heroes. Today some other dude started another thread about the same game, merely to state the fact that Ubisoft would be bringing it over to the States. I can remember at least two more threads on this game, way back when it was first announced.
Doesn't anyone else here think this is a bit silly? In several other forums I frequent (Postback, Gamengai and Shmups, as well as in my forum), there is this policy of one thread per game, so that things can be kept neat and tidy, and so that in two years' time we can easily go back and read each and every user's opinion on the game in question. The thread starts when the game is announced, it gets updated whenever one of us comes across new information, it is still being used once people start buying the game and posting their impressions, and it is brought back to life years afterwards whenever some of us choose to revisit it.
This is how each and every new release is treated on Shmups. Check this, for example:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=9124&highlight=pink+sweets
35 pages, and still going strong. |

Having one topic for a game would be too large and unwieldy. It's nice to break things up into easy to digest segments. It's very possible to have mulitple threads about a game stand alone on their own merits. And given how prone we are to digression (as opposed to the single minded 'spergian HI SCORE shmups crowd)... no. _________________

The one about Ubisoft was actually up first. Which is why my initial comment to Tim's post was something snarky to the effect of there being too many NMH threads. _________________

| Tim's thread is the superfluous one. In it he merely announces that NMH is going to be a video game. |

Can everyone stop mentioning how Shmups or NeoGAF or whoever the fuck does things. The selectbutton forums suck, and we damn like it that way. _________________

it depends. sometimes different threads on the same game will go in different directions and so they both should be kept open. sometimes all the discussion is drawn to one of them, in which case the other one dies... it's rare that you actually need to lock one. _________________

| Selectbutton needs Adrian Monk to come in and clean up this filthy mess. I mean two threads on Earthbound, one on classic rock and it's place in the game, the other on whether you like the game or not and why!? That's madness, this place is spiraling out of control. It'd be so much more convienent if we had to dig through five year old eighty page threads just to discuss some random thought or quick question. |

Well, I wasn't suggesting locking threads. More like people voluntarily choosing to keep all discussion on a specific game in one place.
But yeah, not all forums have to or should follow the same practice. It's just that I've found this one-thread-per-game policy (call it the 1TPG rule, lol) to be really convenient in those other places. And of course threads on general game topics are still being started. But if you just happened to buy a game which everyone else was talking about a month ago, why not resurrect the old thread? This way the discussion would move perhaps even further, by preventing the endless rehashing of things that have already been said a dozen times. |

for whatever reason, that works with some games like currently the Persona 3-one. Though I have no clue why there aren't three or four P3-threads around, I guess it depends on how cool/different a game is that leads to several topics? _________________
