I don't ever recall this happening. The only quote I've seen that might be interpreted this way is that the VC would be "backwards compatible all the way to the NES" (paraphrasing, obviously). Immediately people assumed that this meant that every NES and SNES game would be available at launch -- and immediately again more level-headed people countered by saying that it's far more likely that they'd release a few at a time, much like they are doing now. People also were assuming (very briefly) that the games would be available for download for FREE, which was pretty widespread until a Nintendo rep had to make an official statement denying that.

Okay, I did a Google search for about an hour and couldn't find much of anything. I'm not good at searching for quotes and don't have a Lexus-Nexis hookup, so I have to give it to you there. What I was referring to was the post E3 2005 sentiment that the Revolution would have tons of games available from launch. I wouldn't trust my memory, but didn't Nintendo say something about how the Revolution would have a huge library at launch thanks to the VC alone? And before they showed the controller, the Revolution had nothing going for it at all besides the Virtual Console. I think it was logical reasoning on most people's part to think that Nintendo would provide a huge or decent library from the start. Even if Nintendo never flat out lied about this they helped spin it. I remember EGM doing some interview with Miyamoto and asking what his three favorite Virtual Console era titles he made were. He didn't say "The three ones I'll make available at launch, silly!" It would be interesting to see how many Virtual Console hype articles were in Nintendo Power back then which contributed to the meme that you'd be able to buy a Wii and immedietly have access to all the old Nintendo system games you wish you'd never gotten rid of.

That was over 2 years ago. And we've known since E3 this year that it would work this way.

You know, just because a game won't be on the VC for let's say two year doesn't mean that it doesn't count as a VC game, so even that logic is fairly flawed.

Also, I think the GCN backwards compatibility does give the Wii a fairly large line-up at launch, and that was included in said announcement, so they were honest there as well.

Do you grant the same to the PS3?

From what I hear the PS3 has some really bad compatibility problems with certain PS2 and PSx games, in addition to the fact that they upscale like shit.

The PS3 has some problems, but the PS2 and PS1 both offered an insanely large number of games.

On the other hand, people have been griping hard about what downloadable PS1 games are available for the PSP (and that you need a PS3 for the download.)

Actually, E3 2005 was less than two years ago, but that's picking nits. I don't think any informed person who bought a Wii has a right to say Nintendo lied to them but the service is a dissapointment compared to what we were expecting a year ago.

Disappointed based on vague comments versus press releases.

The PS3 apparenly screws up the graphics of Ico, which basically requires me to keep my PS2 handy if I ever get one.

Anyways, I was just mentioning that to show how even if Nintendo said what showka claimed, they didn't exactly lie.

Don't forget that there are people who complain about useless re-releases of shitty (namely, PAL) games for no apparent reason, why do they have to endure slower games >again<, although there is no reason why they couldn't give them access to proper versions of these games?

I can't imagine that everybody that noticed that he/she was ripped off in the SNES/N64-area will do the same mistake again.
If the VC would unexpectedly tank in Europe, I would be the last person being unhappy with that ...

Isn't VC for the average joe, ignorant of superior emulation?

How long could the "average" European VC user be ignorant about this though? I'd think the internet and word of mouth would inform them pretty fast, even if they weren't normally obsessed about such details like we are.

The only people who would know are... well, the people who already knew that PAL has always gotten the shaft. I'd wager that by the time the Wii gets established the prohibitive majority will have no idea what one would be talking of by the time they got to the 50 mhz vs 60 mhz part, and probably wouldn't care much regardless.

Hell, as crazy as it would be I'm sure some would be pissed of they wouldn't be getting "their" version of these games if Nintendo went the other route.

I haven't seen anyone mention this in the thread. Anybody read the article that InsertCredit linked again?
Quote:
Update: After further testing it seems that not all PAL Virtual Console games will suffer the borders and slower speed. According to UK video game website CVG, both Super Mario 64 and Donkey Kong Country run at full speed and without borders. So, unless Nintendo add some information to the download pages, it seems the quality of each game won't be known until you've spent your Wii Points.

Additionally, last night a friend informed me that the Australians could change their region and download Virtual Console games from other regions. So maybe there's still hope.
