Hmmm, not sure how I missed this thread, but anyways:

Do you mean not showing the ship "Tomorrow" arriving? Or literally cutting 2 or 3 seconds of footage of the dingy floating in the water?
Or I suppose you mean the voice over of her saying the child was fine or whatever. |
I mean cutting out everything right from the point the ship is shown, that part included.
The voice-over definitely felt unnecessary to me. |
I think there was one other point where the film was unnecessarily nice to the audience: when Jasper was killed. I mean, ok, the suicide box being open was a nice little joke, and the fact that he made sure his dog and wife would just sit there and starve to death or anything abnormally cruel, but I think that just seeing him walk out to talk with the men would have been enough, they didn't have to stay through the whole damn thing. How they managed to escape after hanging along so long was beyond my ability to suspend disbelief.
So, I guess saying that the film was too nice to the audience isn't right, the film was too kind to the characters. Seriously there was probably like a total of three minutes in the film that if cut out or properly removed would have made this film escalate from very good to amazing for me. As it stands it's just shy of that. I think that I'm more critical of it because it was so good for so much of it, then it put on the kiddie gloves for those few moments. _________________
