I've never played GW before. I'd like to!
Does anyone want to get a group together? Which campaign should I get? |

The original has the most classes (5 as opposed to 2 in each expansion). It'd probably be the easiest to get into and enjoy GW. I have that one, too, but I won't be able to play it for a couple weeks. _________________ interdimensional |

I have the original and both expansions, and would be willing to rock whichever one semi-regularly. Here's my take on the quality levels:
* Original is pretty hard to earn money, only has 6 playable classes, features a giant burning world.
* Factions is really easy to earn money, adds 2 classes (of those, I only enjoy ritualist, and only then if I play it as a combo with a Necromancer), features some decent quests in a giant chinesey world.
* Nightfall is in-between Factions and Prophecies as far as difficulty, removes the 2 classes from Factions and adds 2 more (again, only one of which I think is actually fun), takes place in a very pretty desert world with longer but often more entertaining quests.
I haven't ever gotten into PVP in any of them, though I hear it's fun. Also, I love sharing items between my characters. Whenever I pick up something useful I just throw it into storage and, chances are, one of my characters somewhere can use it. |

Yep, if you buy Factions, you can play Warrior, Necromancer, Elementalist, Mesmer, Monk, Ranger, Assassin, and Ritualist.
If you buy Nightfall, you can play Warrior, Necromancer, Elementalist, Mesmer, Monk, Ranger, Paragon, and Dervish.
By the way, I played PvP pretty heavily in Guild Wars, and it's pretty enjoyable. However, if you don't play with a group of similarly minded people, it's pretty difficult to enjoy anything other than Random Arena (where you are paired up with 3 other people) and Hero Battles (where you + 3 semi-controlled AI bots face off against someone else). _________________ PS3 - Cryoh

| I should pick up a copy of this one day. I do have a Best Buy giftcard burning a hole in my wallet. I had fun playing as an elementalist/monk back in the day. |

I just got a copy of Prophecies (the original game) for Christmas. I play a Necro-Warrior because I like things hard, and jagged. _________________ Representing the face of destitute gaming |

Guys, I would love to join you in Guild Wars, but I am pretty much firmly rooted in WoW now. I just got a voidwalker for my warlock and bought a new robe. Quest quest quest.
I'd love it if some cool people would join me in that, though. We could form a Select Button guild!
If not, well, I might pick up Guild Wars another day. _________________

I am going to be difficult and say that this is a thread for people who would rather spend $14 per month on games rather than a chatroom.
In all honesty, though, I don't have enough time to play WoW. I've played about 100-120 hours of games in the past year, and that includes several marathons during weeks off from school. Apparently Guild Wars is much more friendly to playing it every now and then, particularly since leveling is apparently pretty quick and there are no montlies. |

The monthly fees have caused me to have second and third and fourth thoughts about continuing to play WoW, but as it stands the $20 retail version comes with another month free, so if I decide that I've had my fill by the end of that period and that I'll no longer play, well, that'd be fine. If it turns out that I enjoy the world and my character so much that I'm willing to shell out $14/month to keep it up, well, I'll certainly consider that. The way this is looking, anyway, it may or may not be eliminating my desire to purchase any number of other videogames, so I may end up actually saving money in the long run.
As for my time, well, that might be something I'll be giving up in massive chunks.
Hell, I'm about to go see what New Year's Eve is like in WoW. _________________

Guild Wars is definitely a good game, but I got kinda turned off to it because it turned out to be a lot more work than I anticipated.
There's much more of a grind to it than people first anticipate, at least when I played it. In order to unlock skills you either have to complete PvE missions or earn faction from PvPing (which is something of a masochistic experience before you get enough skills to make a decently powerful character), both of which are kinda tough compared with WoW due to Guild Wars' limit on equippable skills and its rather hands-off approach to teaching people the capabilities of various classes and skills -- when I played they basically fed you the tooltip, instructed you on the controls and which way to progress in the missions, and that was about it.
Compared with WoW you also can't fuck around as much when you're on your own. PvE generally requires a group or at least a carefully managed band of henchmen (Alesia the original GW Monk hench...god, her incompetence...I get the urge to facepalm just thinking about it), PvP DEFINITELY requires a well-coordinated group to get anything done...about the only thing you can do solo is farm.
WoW may be more of a timesink, but in many ways it gives Guild Wars a run for its money in terms of raw accessibility. WoW holds your hand and gives you a pretty gentle entry into the complex economic and social environment of Azeroth...Guild Wars basically boots you out the door as soon as you're out of pre-searing Ascalon (I never played any of the expansions) and leaves you to fend for yourself. _________________

You're mostly on the money, but I just wanted to let you know that the hero stuff in Nightfall makes it a lot easier to screw around solo in the PvE portion of the game, and the Hero versus Hero stuff gives you a similar option for PvP. If the lack of soloing options turned you off to the original (I always found that pretty annoying) you might like Nightfall better. |

If I ever get back into Guild Wars I think I'd like to try and get into an established PvP guild in order to see if it's as fun as organized WoW PvP, which is honestly my favorite part of WoW. So much fun to be had yelling stupid internet memes at other people on Ventrilo while stomping terribles in the Arenas and such.
I have been informed on another forum that you can now purchase for a modest fee something that many Guild Wars beta testers had wished for from the start, which was the ability to just unlock all skills, runes, etc. for all classes right from the get-go and just PvP right out of the gate. Once I learn more about this deal I may want to do this rather than mucking around in PvP farming things, which I found rather tedious. _________________

Yep, you can purchase PvP unlock packs for each of the respective games for $30 a pop. If you've already got sufficient skillz at earning Balthazar faction points, you can be totally geared out for a pri/sec in 1 hour, versus 2 months. _________________ PS3 - Cryoh

Now is a pretty good time to earn faction, too. The Wintersday snowball fights can easily net you a shit-ton, and you don't have to worry about skills or level since everyone's just about equal. Considering that tomorrow's the end of the Wintersday stuff, though, I dunno. _________________ Representing the face of destitute gaming |

I bought this today. The original seems to have gone down to $30 at Best Buy!
I'm probably gonna make an Elementalist/Monk and have some fun tonight. Also, I'm probably going to cancel my WoW account!!
If anyone wants to hang, let me know. |

Guys, I just uninstalled this game yesterday. Why did I miss this thread completely. :(
I bought this game the day it came out, but still have not reached "The Cataclysm." It's pretty sad, but I just couldn't get into it. It's been sitting on my hard drive taking up space, but I just could not muster the will to take interest in it. Probably because I was always going solo. I am also still the leader of the official IC guild, because everyone else left.
If I can play with you guys I will install it again. |

I'm free whenever I don't have any homework to do and I'm not at the game store. That'd be weekdays at around seven, Mountain Time.

| I may or may not be free tomorrow night? I am free after 2 Central Time on Tuesdays and Thursdays and after 3:30 on Monday Wednesday and Friday. I have a lvl 20, in the original and a character who just passed the cataclysm. I can make a brand new character if you guys don't won't either one of those two. ALSO: I am going to start Nightfall soon and if there is anybody else out there not far into Nightfall, it would totally rock for us to team up. Just so you know. If you know what I mean. |

Does the IC guild have a guild hall? The guild I started has a guild hall. You guys can join mine and we can make it into the new SelectButton Guild if you want?. My Guild was started to organize all the people that went to the art school that I went to who played Guild Wars. Nobody really plays anymore and leadership is constantly being cycled around.
I'm about to get on so if you want to get together just send me a message. |
