I assume there aren't too m any of you who live in japan. I assume there are even less who have jobs involving puppets.

Yet, does anyone know anything about puppet careers in tokyo? I hear that tokyo disney is a good gig, but if I'm going to move out there, I need backups.

Yeah, it's "not be homeless" work that I'm looking for. Though, I wouldn't mind experimenting with homelessness.

Not many. I'm at a marionette theater right now that's a full-time thing, but skelethulu is talking about moving to tokyo, which is something I'd like to undertake. But, I'd still like to have a relatively entertaining job, and puppeteering is where it's at in that regard. Looking past what unappealing words "puppet" and "puppeteer" are.

I'd be all about joining a bunraku troupe. I only wonder whether it would be harder for a gaijin to join, since the puppeteers are visible and it's a comparatively traditional form.

How about those people who dress up in squirrel costumes and such for commercials? Is it easy to get a job as one of those dudes?

Yeah it IS sort of a celebrated traditional Japanese thing over there so I don't expect foreigners are wanted in anything smelling of "art." You know I think you've got something there though with the commercial applications. Prepare to be taken advantage of, though. :(

Taken advantage of? Are the squirrel slaves poorly paid?

Actually I really have no idea, hah. That shit with NOVA and etc. is just stuck in my head and has probably tainted my whole idea of finding a job and working for a company as a foreigner in Japan. Though I suppose the opposite could be true as well for a, uh, niche job market like puppetry. It could be a great deal! Just you, the hot, hot costumes, and widespread televised exposure!

I always say be prepared, though.

Yeah, that's what it's all about.

Anyone else here have stories about being a foreigner and finding work in japan?

I don't know what this nova news is. It's irrelevant, because I will not go to japan if teaching english is my only option.

That's okay. These plans wouldn't come to fruition for another year or two.

Or you could just do what I did: rob a bank and then live off of that for the rest of your life.

You can always get a job as a file clerk.

Never know what you'll find behind the cabinets.

The traditional arts are on life support in Japan right now so I think there'd be more jobs at Disneyland and such anyway.
