it's actually kind of a nightmare over here. i consider apple's software to be, for the most part, superior to all of the third-party stuff. however, every god damned apple application has some huge crippling flaw that keeps me from, you know, actually using it.
for example,
1. mail just simply will not ever save my outgoing messages.
2. ichat continually and repeatedly loses my connection to google talk. like, i can log in and chat for five minutes before it signs me out.
3. safari just . . . sticks every time i try to send a gmail message. it just can't handle gmail!
what the hell!
miraculously, i think leopard has fixed safari, though fuck, mail and ichat, awesome as their HUGE NEW UPGRADES might be, still don't do what i want, even though they're supposed to. man, what a fucking waste. _________________

It seems a ton faster, though that might be 'cause I did a full format/reinstall.
Anyone who wants to turn off the disgusting huge reflective dock effect, use this command in terminal:
defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES ; killall Dock |

| Tim, did you know Gmail are doing IMAP now? If you're lucky and your account has had it enabled (mine hasn't yet) that might work a little better. |

okay literally fucking beside myself with rage over here
thunderbird manages to store fucking copies of my sent messages quite easily, and it's a hideous piece of software
why the fuck can't mail do the same thing?!?!?!?!?
| help wrote: |
Mail automatically saves copies of messages you send. For IMAP accounts, you can change where to store sent messages.
To save sent messages for IMAP accounts:
■To store copies of messages you send on the mail server, choose Mail > Preferences, click Accounts, and select an account. Click Mailbox Behaviors and select “Store sent messages on the server.” If this option is not selected, sent messages are stored on your computer and you won’t be able to see them if you check your mail from another computer.
■To store copies of sent messages in a different mailbox on the server, select a server-based mailbox from the list of mailboxes and choose Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Sent. |
yeah, i'm using an IMAP account, though fuck, why doesn't it save my sent messages on MY COMPUTER when i choose to not store them on the server? like, seriously. that's not a very difficult function for god's sake _________________

| As for iChat, you MIGHT be able to fix it by changing it to using port 443 instead of 5190. It's somewhere in the settings. |

What's the verdict on upgrading? I got my wife a new iMac literally two days ago and we'll be getting Leopard tonight. She's already set everything up how she wants it on the iMac so we'll probably just upgrade it. Does that leave a whole lot of cruft behind and make for a possibly slower system vs. a fresh install? _________________

Translucent menu bar is retarded, but Finder's handling of networked drives and machines is SO SO SO MUCH BETTER. Also, Spotlight is as useful as Quicksilver as an application launcher, now.
Still no option to sort folders at the top of the list, though. |

| I'm setting up a Windows partition so I can play HL2 without BSODing like it does on my desktop, and Bootcamp Assistant made it FAT32. Fuck that noise. I deleted it and made it NTFS from within the Windows installer. Hopefully it still works. I had it as NTFS from the start in Tiger >:| |

THIS DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. I don't remember how it worked on Tiger, but I don't see any way to use NTFS for my XP partition on Leopard, and my ghetto way resulted in the system booting to a broke-ass FAT32 partition. |

This is true!!
I don't even have to run the stupid little program to get my shared 500GB drive to show up, anymore.
My Windows partition is too small for me to do anything with!! :( _________________

stacks are very useful. quicklook is amazing, no doubt, just tap the spacebar.
"spaces" or virtual desktops, as they're known to anyone who's run linux since 1997, are pretty standard.
new dock is nice. I'm runnin' this on a Core2Duo, very very snappy. Faster than Tiger. Safari launches in one second, maybe less..
Quicksilver always shows up in the dock now, though, that's pretty annoying.
I live in a house with a lot of Samba shares. The new finder is much, much, better. I haven't tried Time machine yet. Cover flow is very quick, a lot quicker than I thought it'd be!
No notes sync to iPhone, lame. _________________

No. All Mac OS X applications and services are self-contained and modular. That's a problem on Windows, where there are loose DLL's floating around. The only thing might be if the file system has become fragmented over time, which just means disk access time will be slower, but hers is new, so!
The number one feature is the universal consistent window look.
The number two feature is the John Siracusa review that will be published on Sunday.
Here's his 10.4 one.
I will read this to my children. |

| Naw, Troops, the number one feature is the new Finder network snappiness. Soooo nice! I can also vouch for Leopard feeling slightly faster, and if my eyes don't deceive me my battery life might even be slightly improved? It's hard to tell. |

You know, the battery life has seemed better and my MBP 17" has run a LOT cooler since the latest firmware update.
I would know because I post all this internet shit naked, with this MBP on my bare thighs while sitting on my mat on the floor. _________________

I played with this today and though I love Quick-Look, stacks, Time Machine etc.—wow, do I ever hate the new shiny grey Finder. Fuck, is it 1997 again? I want pearly white, you fuckers. The transparent menu bar is so useless, you'd almost think Microsoft thought of it.
Actually, the amount of "reminds me of Vista" moments made me do this: :-(
I will wait until one of two things happens:
1) I can buy this for work and install it at home
2) Somebody releases a pearly-white mod to get rid of the iTunes-grey on everything
Hmm. Maybe two of two things. _________________ Illustration Portfolio | The Gamer's Quarter |

someone is already working on a hack that makes the corners of the screen rounded again. wow, just wow.
i'm sure you'll have your pearl white in a matter of days. hours?
i'm waiting to install this until after i'm able to make a bootable back up of my whole HDD, which requires an external HDD, which I just purchased from amazon.com.
the icons for the "spaces" and "expose" applications (and why are they now considered as such?) are ugly as sin. |

The new System Preferences icon is ugly too :(
Also my Airport Extreme Gigabit edition won't stop fucking freezing. I had to downgrade the firmware in hopes that it will resolve the problem. This is in no way related to Leopard. _________________

It'll grow on me. Much like the slowness of OSX 10.0.
I ran the beta for months before it was released. The beta was like 100x faster. I think Leopard is finally as fast if not faster than the beta. _________________

god damn it
i put my computer to sleep earlier

i'm not asking how to put the keyboard into japanese typing mode, i'm asking how to change what the actual keyboard layout is recognized as. as in:
japanese keyboards have keys in different places.
for example, on a japanese keyboard, the apostrophe is shift+7
+ is shift+;
( is shift+8
) is shift+9
et cetera.
when my computer last awoke from sleep, it was set to a US English layout
in other words, ( is now shift+9, ) is shift+0, et cetera
my macbook pro has a japanese keyboard.
i have actually very seldom ever used a computer that didn't have a japanese keyboard, so i'm used to the japanese layout.
having it set in a US english layout is very seriously cutting my typing speed, like, in half. _________________

Oh man I was just watching the leopard features tour on the apple website, and I just about sprayed my pants with diarrhea over how awesome it looks.
Anyone know how I can get a copy of this on the cheap...legally? I can probably finagle a student discount from the apple store, but even $100 seems like a lot after I broke my bank account on oil this week.
