okay, so let's see here. thus far i have successfully made a partition for and installed ubuntu, and booted into it exactly once so that i could (with some not insurmountable difficulty) make grub by default boot into windows with a 3 second timeout window.
this involved me teaching myself what the 'sudo' command does (hey thanks for telling me i couldn't edit that file elsewise when as far as i know i'm the only use who ought to have any privileges for anything), and still i would've been completely for shit had i not known that you have to use 'gedit' in unix. anywho.
ubuntu boots with this little notice in the top right saying that there aren't any open drivers for my modem or video card, and would i like to use restricted ones? i tried enabling them for the radeon, to no avail.
something of a bigger issue is that it doesn't appear to recognize my wireless card at all. it's listed in the device manager and all, but nothing else on there gives me any indication that ubuntu knows what to do with it. presumably if i could get online i would have a much better chance of actually finding proper video drivers, so i'd kind of like to iron this one out first.
thank you!! |

saves you a bit of your precious time figuring out what went wrong.
that aside, I have no clue how you can get the restricted radeon drivers working despite using the installer (adept-manager or whatever it is called) or googeling a ka

I'm relatively new to (k)ubuntu as well and still trying things here and there so sorry I can't be of more help than that. _________________

It isn't your fault at all, but damn you Felix for telling me this. My wireless card worked back with Breezy Badger all the way to Edgy Eft. Once Feisty Fawn came out, I had the exact same problem. Worse yet, my old solution didn't seem to work either. I'm now worried that I'll still run into it with Gutsy, though I really need a good working linux install again for the future.
Anyway, I'll still give my old wireless fix. If you can find out the chipset for your wireless card, that will help you find out if its well supported by linux. Then you might either find some open source drivers for it, or more likely, you can use a little tool called ndiswrapper, which lets you use the windows driver in linux to get it working. If you google for that you should find some easy and handy instructions on how to do it.
As for video cards, I once did some fancy schmancy shit to get my ATI card working well, but I honestly don't remember what I did anymore. I think at one point I was able to find and successfully install the non open drivers, and overall I always had good graphical performance. Whatever solution you find might require to reconfigure XORG, but that's not too terrible.
Keep me informed. |

The reason for sudo or su is that 99% of the time, you should not have admin privileges while using your comp. This is why windows has such big problems with rootkits/spyware. This system keeps your comp. safe. it can be a pain, but it saves you tons of heartache in the longrun
I dont know why you cant get your wireless working. If it recognized your card, you should just be able to go to the network manager and find a network to connect to... If that doesnt work try tweaking the settings...if its a laptop make sure your wireless button is activated (if applicable)... if still nothing: ubuntuforums. Also drag the cat5 over, and see if you cant get some sort of update online to... well... get you online :)
I upgraded this shitty compaq laptop I had from Feisty to Gusty and was having some serious problems, so I decided to check out the newest openSuse distro (10.3). I have been very happy with it, it seems geared towards KDE, which im digging, but I might go back to the gnome DE (which is what ubuntu uses). Ubuntu does some things wonderfully, but there are other great distros out there, mandriva, suse, fedora etc. Almost all of these allow for live cds to be able to check it out w/o installing _________________

| Depending on what wireless card you have, you might have to use ndiswrapper to get the drivers working properly. It's a hassle, but when I ran Ubuntu, having to mess with that helped me to familiarize myself with how Ubuntu and the command line work, so it was probably a good experience. |

Really, if you haven't already I have to suggest asking there. They are usually fairly helpful. Also, trick for posting problems there: don't bump your topics. They have a function to see all posts with zero replies and helpful people often go through the list. |

The first thing anyone who runs Ubuntu should do is to install yakuake and bind it to the tilde key, as well as add it to the start-up session. It is so good, guys. _________________ go away extralife

i am married to xubuntu right now, if only because it loads super fast, looks nice enough for how simple it is and works wonderfully on my pentium 3 @ 800 mhz ibm thinkpad a21m (which, in accordance with naming my networked electronics after weapons, is called claymore).
i suggest that you use automatix to deal with any problems you have with video drivers. just note that it has the awfully nasty tendency to sometimes completely drive your installation batshit insane,
about your wireless: most integrated cards tend to not work -- you might have to spring for an external adapter. i suggest anything with the rt2500 chipset, since that chipset tends to like working out of the box. at any rate, don't ask me why your integrated chipset doesn't work, i don't know and that's more of an ubuntuforums question (which they will not be able to give you a solid enough reply, probably).
get on google and look for "wicd manager ubuntu," which will give you some information on the wicd network manager, which i use instead of the default network manager for ubuntu (which i've since disabled).
as for anything else: lolusux _________________ select button

also i gotta install this onto a hard drive which will then go into another computer (with no boot option but hd) so i can either try to convert that computer's current debian installation into gentoo via a rootkit or something or grub.
i mean what the fuck is this shit about compiling it like do i compile the boot cd or what the fuck |

Man, get yourself a livecd appropriate for your arch, and follow the gentoo handbook. There are things I prefer to do differently these days, but the handbook will get you a working gentoo system. _________________

Had the same problem with my wireless card on my laptop after installing Gutsy Gibbon. My laptop uses a Broadcom wireless adapter, which was like 'HAY, use a restricted driver to work'. So I go to load the driver and it's all 'HELL NO GTFO'. So I searched online with my PC, and I found that they sort of made access to the restricted drivers retarded to the point that a lot of users are complaining online (apparently this is a low-level complaint).
Anyways, you go to the Synaptic Package Manager under Administration. Go to Repositories under Settings and start checking boxes, especially Proprietary Drivers for Devices (Restricted). Then connect to the internet via a proper wire and go back to the Restricted Drivers Manager. Click the drivers you want to run and hope for the best!
Hope that helps the issue, and hurrah...my first Linux tutorial. |
