something of a bigger issue is that it doesn't appear to recognize my wireless card at all. it's listed in the device manager and all, but nothing else on there gives me any indication that ubuntu knows what to do with it. presumably if i could get online i would have a much better chance of actually finding proper video drivers, so i'd kind of like to iron this one out first.

It isn't your fault at all, but damn you Felix for telling me this. My wireless card worked back with Breezy Badger all the way to Edgy Eft. Once Feisty Fawn came out, I had the exact same problem. Worse yet, my old solution didn't seem to work either. I'm now worried that I'll still run into it with Gutsy, though I really need a good working linux install again for the future.
Anyway, I'll still give my old wireless fix. If you can find out the chipset for your wireless card, that will help you find out if its well supported by linux. Then you might either find some open source drivers for it, or more likely, you can use a little tool called ndiswrapper, which lets you use the windows driver in linux to get it working. If you google for that you should find some easy and handy instructions on how to do it.
As for video cards, I once did some fancy schmancy shit to get my ATI card working well, but I honestly don't remember what I did anymore. I think at one point I was able to find and successfully install the non open drivers, and overall I always had good graphical performance. Whatever solution you find might require to reconfigure XORG, but that's not too terrible.
Keep me informed. |
