The reason for sudo or su is that 99% of the time, you should not have admin privileges while using your comp. This is why windows has such big problems with rootkits/spyware. This system keeps your comp. safe. it can be a pain, but it saves you tons of heartache in the longrun
I dont know why you cant get your wireless working. If it recognized your card, you should just be able to go to the network manager and find a network to connect to... If that doesnt work try tweaking the settings...if its a laptop make sure your wireless button is activated (if applicable)... if still nothing: ubuntuforums. Also drag the cat5 over, and see if you cant get some sort of update online to... well... get you online :)
I upgraded this shitty compaq laptop I had from Feisty to Gusty and was having some serious problems, so I decided to check out the newest openSuse distro (10.3). I have been very happy with it, it seems geared towards KDE, which im digging, but I might go back to the gnome DE (which is what ubuntu uses). Ubuntu does some things wonderfully, but there are other great distros out there, mandriva, suse, fedora etc. Almost all of these allow for live cds to be able to check it out w/o installing _________________
